I wonder if there's a correlation between the voting results and the point in time when the image was submitted... In other words, do last-minute submissions rate higher than ones that were submitted on the first day? I wonder if it pays be be a procrastinator (read "thorough planner")

I'd say it's person to person. I've done well (and extremely poorly) each way. I will say that submitting early greatly increases my desire to bail out as the submission period closes.

How would it pay, unless it gives the photographer more time to produce the image?

My highest scorer was submitted within an hour of the challenge being announced so I can't say whether procrastinating is key to success..

I don't think it matters that much. The pollution one I submitted the first day and it's in the high 6s right now and looks to be a PB. One other I submitted on the first day is my lowest score. In general I do tend to wait hoping inspiration will strike prior to the deadline. :)
