I’m not a jump right in kind of person – I’m more like test the water with one toe and wade in slowly. I got started in digital with a P&S from my mother in law to make e-mailing pictures of my son easier. I’m not sure why I was so resistant to the DSLR idea – the whole mirror thing just seemed so old fashioned – so I tried an ultra-zoom for more range and control. I mean it has focal length eq of 28-504, IS, manual mode, RAW capability – I mean what more could one want? Well, quick & reliable AF for one, decent high ISO for another.

The ultra zoom was a good learning experience and for most of my shooting needs, it did just fine. Until my son̢۪s Christmas concert that is. ISO 800 images were so soft from NR that they look OOF and still show noise even printed at 4x6. The prints were bad enough that even my wife noticed. So she want and gave me a D80 with the 70-300vr and has the new 16-85vr on order. I guess I̢۪m in now!

My old camera was a D80, before I upgraded to a D300. Good luck with it! It's a wonderful device.
