I have CS3, but have absolutely no experience with InDesign. I took some layout classes in college, but we used FreeHand (Anyone remember that one?) I have some decent experience with Illustrator as I occasionally design logos and bussiness cards for people. But with a brochure, I am lost.
Can anyone suggest a place to find good templates for InDesign? All I really want is a starting point (...or a finished product, JK). Even a good tutorial would be great! This brochure is for an on-site portrait and event service my sis and I are starting.
also, am I making a mistake trying to use InDesign? I am assuming things will come by fairly quickly for me with my knowledge of the other programs, if I only had a kick start. oooooooh, I just want to take pictures! |

There should be some templates built in. Take a look at those, they'll get you started down the right path.
Once you get the hang of it, InDesign is a piece of cake. |

You need a starting point and you sound very lost. Don't confuse the tools with the project!
Is this for you or someone else? What size brochure? Who will print it, and what do they want file wise? Template? As in for the design or for the size of it? Ask the printer and they'll usually have a template or measurements you use to set up your document.
I've used the predecessor to InDesign and until recently used it (pagemaker) but it's soooooo old now I've found that PS works well, or I use FotoFusion, my album design software.

thanks spazmo99 and Prof_Fate !
My former graphic design teacher would definitely agree. Basically, I need to open it up, click new, and get started. I've done thumbnails for my logo, now I need a starting point for my layout. It's just been a long time and it's a new program for me. As far as printing... I don't know who I'm going with, but, initially I'll be printing on my Photosmart 8700 at work. Size, well that's another one of the main reasons for wanting a template. The lazy design artist in me was just wanting something I could plug a logo and pics in in... but now I'm excited to delve in to InDesign.
Anyone know some tutorials that may get my juices flowing, so to speak? |

I use Quark and InDesign all the time -- it *is* what you want to use for this purpose.
The main starting questions are paper size/folding pattern and number being printed (and how).
It should actually be a lot like using Illustrator -- drag guides from the rulers, and you will be laying out text blocks and pictures. Remember to make the panels about 1/16" different in size to allow for folding. |
