Anyone ever been out shooting here? I've never been and am not a huge race fan, but saw a sign for the upcoming Wine Country Classic which looks like it could be a great opportunity to shoot a bunch of old classic racecars, and maybe a good opportunity for another SF GTG.
But looking at the track website, its unclear whether you have to shoot from the grandstand, or whether there are places where you can stand near the track to get shots of the cars as they race down the track. Anyone been, and have any info as to where you can shoot, or any interest in a GTG for this race. Its a ways off -- May 31-June 1 -- but thought I'd post now before I forget. |

Shot there dozens of times...
Essentially, without a media credential, you cannot be track-side at the best photo spots, but there are so many good locations to get great images without shooting through a fence. Fans are not required to sit in the grandstands nor is the access to any of them likely to be restricted, due to the unlikelyhood of a sell-out. This leaves you free to roam all around the place. The track's elevation changes create good photo ops and good lines of sight.
I've gotten good results with 300 mm lenses. During the Wine Country Classics, the paddock is open to general admission, so it is easy to get up close and personal to the cars and their owners if desired.
I'd say, "Don't miss it, and enjoy!" and it's very likely I'll see you there !
For sure rasai will be there, he never misses the event (helps to live only 7 miles away...) |

Thanks for the info ... 300 f/4 is my max; 250 f/6.7 if I want to use an autofocus lens and I was worried that wouldn't be quite enough reach to get good track action. You've managed some nice shots with a similar set up. And, yeah, I was worried about shooting through a fence. Do they let you in with a monopod? If so, I might pick up a 2x extender prior to the event.
I think I'm gonna put this on the calendar and try to make it. Since its unlikely to sell out and GA to boot, sounds like I can wait a while before springing for tickets. Anyone up for a GTG? |

Since you drive onto the grounds and park, you can take whatever fits in your car. With the case of Tim and I, we ride our motorcycles there, and have never been restricted, AND have taken tri-pods in, even during the NASCAR event, where every seat IS filled, and almost all viewing areas are 3 to 4 deep with fans.
Looks like we have 3 for GTG. |
