Long story short – I have volunteered for this Infant Bereavement thing at the local hospital. So that I am as prepared as possible to get nothing but great shots for these families I have been throwing myself intentionally into tough lighting situations for practice – blonds in the snow, people in dark clothes at dusk, dimly lit public places with only natural light, etc. As part of this practice, I was able to shoot the dress rehearsal for the Nutcracker before Christmas. I am just now getting around to processing these ballerina shots as the dance studio would love some shots to hang up – which is totally cool with me.

Here are the first two processing attempts in this really tough shooting situation. I was not allowed out front, I couldn̢۪t get the orchestra in any shots so I had to be off to either side of the stage, I didn̢۪t have any IS glass at that time, and kids where running about everywhere. It was a blast-and-a-half though.

Before I keep going in this direction, I would appreciate any comments on these two:

I like the color one better, it's more full of life and emotion IMO. Not sure if you want this kind of info or not, but the girls in the bg...they're a substantial part of the composition and I really want them to be in focus. Obviously that's not going to happen, so how would it look to touch them up with a little gaussian blur to push them OOF a tad more? Just a thought.

...and kudos to you on the local hospital volunteer work. I couldn't do that in a million years!!! That's got to be a very difficult situation. Can't imagine...

left a comment on your b/w one... not sure if it's what you're looking for.

Thanks very much for the comments - I will continue to play with these and try to incorporate your suggestions.

[NOTE: light bar removal and more work on color correction]

Ballet is a tough subject. Especially shooting from the wings during a live performance.

The color is nice, but the b/w version is my preference. Unfortunately, the composition is awkward. A tighter crop on the main subject on the left might be the best bet. Even just cropping out the floating arm and skirt on the right would help.

Suggestion. Try getting the opportunity to shoot the dress rehearsal. Nine times out of ten the staging, lighting and costumes are every bit as good the live performance, except you have more ease of movement.

Keep shooting the arts though, its most rewarding when you get that right shot.

The color one has more "life," I think, and some attractive soft tones. The black-and-white one is nice too, but if I had to pick...
