Ok, I'll freely admit that I'm just too lazy to look all this up in the manual at the moment. I just bought a new SB-800 as a backup to the one I already have. In addition to being a backup unit, I want to be able to use one SB-800 mounted on my D300, and set the other one up as a remote.

I think this will come in handy for things like group shots at a wedding; I am anticipating using the extra one to fire off in the background to light the pulpit a bit better, for example, while the main one on the camera illuminates the people.

So what do I need to set on the camera/flash units to accomplish this? I've used the one SB-800 as a slave before, but only in SU4 mode. I believe it's possible to get much more control by using the more advanced remote capabilities, but I don't know much about using them...

Any help will be appreciated. God forbid I should read the instructions :)

I fixed your post, the answer was there the whole time. :P

I don't have a D300 but this is what you do on the D200. Go to commander mode and you have to set the built-in and groups(you get two). I figure you want to set them to TTL, but maybe manually setting the levels would be easier, you can do it from the commander menu. Then on the sb-800 you have off camera you need to set it to it slave mode I think. I think the manual is your friend. :)

i find keeping the master on ttl &
the other slave channels on manual gives me the light i usually want
you can dick around with it / spending hours
the next step is the su200 ;) which give (imo) better control

Put the slave SB-800 in remote mode (hold down "SEL", and then it's the box in the top-right).

Put the SB-800 on the camera in Master mode (it's in the same menu as "remote" mode above).

Done.
