This topic has probably been covered many times, but I am looking for specific info if anyone could help me out.

I am considering purchasing the S7000 or something similar. Thru my research I have learned that most cameras of this type have a minimum aperture of f8. I will be using this camera with studio lighting. With my film camera's I sometimes must use smaller apertures.

Has anyone had problems with using studio lighting, or problems with the limited aperture range.

I really appreciate the help!!!!

I considered buying the S7000 but was put off by what reviews said about image quality. Consider the Minolta A1. It has slightly less resolution (2560x1920 compared to the S7000's 2832x2136) but it's aperture goes down to F11. In addition to several hotshoe flash options it has a PC sync terminal so you can connect a studio flash system. A1 prices have dropped a lot since Monolta announced an 8mp version, the A2.

well i have canaon a40 and god knows what canon was thinking when they made this great amzing camera with aperture going down till f-14.

I use studio strobes withy my camera, when i wanted to buy a new camera i realized all camera except say DSLR had aperture is range of f8

I was in a fix till some one gave me a great idea od using Neutral density filter with any new camera thus decreasing the light.

One can buy them in different f stop

When I was looking for a camera (December thru mid January) I went to alot of electronics stores to get my hands on as many cameras as I could. I did not find the s7000, but I did get to play around with the s5000 and I found the shutter lag was to much for my liking. I Bought the Minolta A1 and I have no complaints. For serious studio work though I would think an SLR would be a better choice. Check out this sight, not a well designed website but they have some great offers.

It would probably help to give a little more detail about my needs. The studio work I do is part-time and a lot of I do is just my family. I am trying to get my feet wet in the digital arena. Right now an SLR is not in the budget unless I sell off some film cameras. Normally what I do is take the profit from the studio work to buy new equipment. That way my hobby pays for itself.

I would much rather have an S2 or S3, because I already have a lot of Nikon lenses.

Another big question I have is would I be better off and just continue to wait and save up for the SLR or go ahead a buy to S7000 or similar and make money from to buy the SLR?

Thanks for the quick responses from everyone, I am looking at the other cameras that have been suggested also. I was just looking at the Fuji, because that is the SLR I want and thought it would be a good idea to be familiar with their software.

Strange. My old s602z, its predecessor goes to f11. My biggest beef with camera is that ISo won't go nay lower than 160 at 6M

Hi Ace
We are in almost similar scenario where we would like to go for a slr but cannot go for it right now.

I work with a40 using and digital peanut slave because in built flash is eTTL.
I would suggest get something like a70 or a80 or something in that price range and as you mentioned earn for a proper slr , it will really great if you can earn enough using a not a very expnesive digital camera without haveing to sell your film equipment
best of luck

the s602 is awesome, and is at a great price right now. i wouldn't believe that the s7000 has poor image quality. it uses a sensor that's newer than the one in the S2 pro, and the pictures out of that are phenomenal. the only problem with the s7000 is the fixed lense, and obviously it's not a true slr. i think it's probably one of the best prosumer cams out there right now. if you can afford a pro camera, get an S3, or get a bargain on an S2, you'll get great pictures. the S2 works perfect for portraits and studio work.
