I'm going to be using the "Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM" lens for an indoor basketball game for a bunch of sixth graders (middle school tournament).

Is that lens (2.8) going to be fast enough for typical middle school gymnasium lighting? It will be in the afternoon, so there will be daylight coming through the upper windows in addition to the artificial lighting.

The last time I shot in that same gym (for volleyball), I used my 3.5 and a 4.0 lenses and all but a few were blurry.

It depends, I shot indoor at my schools gym with my 2.8 at iso 1600 and i could shoot at about 1/400, so depending on the gym lighting, you can check some out here if you'd like. They are under basketball.

As Ryan posted, you'll very likely still need high ISO, which should be no problem on the 40D. All depends on the lighting. You'll probably want to set a custom, manual white balance, or at very least shoot RAW and use a set (not auto) WB. The second choice will mean you'll have to spend time tweaking in the WB during conversion on one shot, but then you can apply it to the rest.

All those were shot last week in manual, ISO1250, f/1.8 at 1/640sec. It was in the evening, so there was no natural lighting coming in. The 70-200 f/2.8L IS will be fine, just jack the ISO up to at least 1000, use manual exposure and set a custom white balance - you won't regret it. The 40D's noise control is great at ISO800-1600.

yeah, and if you have the money dont settle for anything without IS too. i settled for the 70-200 2.8 without IS and at the time i wish i had waited 2 more weeks till i had the rest of the money because there has been many occasions where i needed it.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Yes, it is an IS lens. Great shots, Ryan and Brad.

Fritz, I almost always shoot RAW. I'll crank up the ISO and see what I get tomorrow when at the gym. I want the speed to be fast enough not only to stop the motion, but also to be able to shoot at 6.5 frames/sec (or close to that).

I'm not sure if I want to manually set the WB or just set it to a specific preset and then (batch) adjust in ACR. I know those gyms can produce some funky, mixed light temperatures. :-(
