Hi Folks.
I just entered my second challenge here after a long hiatus, and have picked up on some etiquette issues that I am hoping a kind soul could shed some light on.
1) What per cent of challenge entries does one feel obligated to comment upon? 300 entries in the Silence challenge could take a long time, indeed!
2) What are "Favourite" photos, and how many/often should a well-meaning member be selecting them? Is this how photos/photographers are ranked/displayed at the site? Do you feel selecting favorites to be an important obligation?
Thanks for your replies :) |

1. As many as you want. You actually learn a lot by making comments.
2. Favorite photos are the ones you like. If there's a photo you like by selecting it you don't have to look for it. I like to select a photo to reference it in the future. |

I agree, you learn a lot by making coments and I prefer to make as many coments as a can rather than voting for all the images in each challenge, at least if I think I´ve something useful to add.
I dont have selected many favorite photos, rather favorite photagrapher if I think they are very skilled and I like most of what they seems to be doing.
And yes by doing that you are ranking them. If go to the Site favorites through the Community button at the top-bar you can see what photographer have most often been chosen favorites and this goes also for photos. |

Welcome back Robert.
How many entries you comment on is a matter of personal preference, most think quality is more important than quantity. We all like to get comments because we feel that is how we learn and improve. I used to try to leave comments on a certain percentage of each challenge but found myself leaving simple attaboys so have stopped aiming at a goal for number of comments.
As for picking favorites one person is not going to influence the rankings much so we don't consider that aspect of it. Your own favorites lists are more useful as a way to keep track of the ones you really like. Also, it is a nice way to pay a compliment.
BTW, I loved Going Back Home. You can still beat with the best of them.

Until I got broadband access last week, my 'votes received' was far higher than my 'votes cast', due to the excessive cost of dial-up voting. In the spirit of mutal help, (personally) I'd like to have at least an equal balance. So, I'll be voting on 100% of entries for the meantime.
Favourites is a dicy game. There are so many great shots here and only a 200 limit. (Why is that limited, anyway?) I hate deselecting prior choices, so I find that I don't select them in the first place - weird, eh? Choose what you like. |

1st rule, is that all great and renowned drummers can do whatever they like :)
2nd rule is that anyone asking such a considerate question should be applauded and welcomed back. As you so succinctly point out, each of us has only so much time. The use of your time is solely up to you. It is a hard fact, that the more photos you view and judge, the more you develop your own skill sets. Some of the photos here are just so amazing that one simply has no choice but to add to their favorites.

I don't feel OBLIGATED to comment on any entry, but I try to comment on those shots that I feel would benefit the most from some constructive criticism, or deserve congratulations for excellence.
I just pick out photos and photographers that I like as favorites. Ther are probably some that I should have added that I don't have on there, and maybe some on there that I really don't look at, but I'm not worrying about it |

John Setzler once suggested that you should try leaving 3 times as many comments as you receive. I'm a long way from that. But I tend to leave longer comments, so maybe I make up for quantity with quality. Or maybe not. :) But there is no "site obligation" to leave any comments if you don't want or feel like it. Generally, I think most people would rather have a few well considered comments than a ton of "nice shot" comments.
Favorites are nothing more than that - your favorites. A quick way to get to pics or photographers you like. |

Roger, wait a minute... wait a minute...
"Site Etiquette"? Isn't that a DPC contradiction sorta like "military intelligence"?

To everyone else kind enough to reply:
Thanks for your helpful input. I will try get as many comments in as posible - but business travel will interfere, I'm afraid. Good luck to all in the current and upcoming challenges! |
