Not sure if this would end up being too subjective - but we all have visual stereotypes of both our own nationality - and other countries.

These might be serious documentary type shot of a formal or informal national outfit, the Brit in the bowler hat carrying his brolly, and a copy of the Times (yes they do exist), Lifeguards on parade at Buckingham Palace, British Bobby . .

or a clearly tongue-in-cheek poke national stereotypes - Americans in loud clothing, Japanese sprouting techy gadgets, New Zealanders with their favourite sheep - or is that Aussies?, no sorry - I meant the Welsh . . anyway - you get the idea :- )

would be an interesting challenge, but I'm sure there would be a few tro- um, sorry, voters - who would find pictures of stereotypes offensive, no matter how you cut it.

Ok said my $.02 worth, going to hop back on my dogsled's runners, yell 'Mush' and return to my igloo for a refreshing swig of maple syrup, followed by poutine and beer for supper...;-)

That's alright - they don't need to join in - heck if they tell us where they're from we'll do something special just for them :- )

That's easy! I've got loads of models I can pick from who have red hair and freckles, eat potatoes and cabbage washed down with Guinness, and dance barefoot at the crossroads until dusk.

Hey, IMO the best way to fight stereotypes is to show how ridiculous they are, so yeah, let's ridicule a few of them :D
02/27/2008 04:43:34 PM · #12
I think the challenge would be extremely "offensive" to some who get their feelings hurt easily, but I really think it would be a lot of fun and we would get some pretty hilarious ones in there.

I agree...and let's face it, every so often the challenges are REALLY boring...national stereotypes would be fun even if we did step on a few toes...

Hey, I'm self-identified as Canadian, eh? But ethnically speaking I'm Anglo(English)/Black Irish(Irish/Spanish)/Scottish/French and Creole (Spanish/black)...so I could probably insult everyone on dpc except Asian voters if I tried!!

You're being too hard on yourself - I'm sure you could insult Asian voters as well :- )

Funny thing is so far the most response on this seems to come from Canada - I thought you were all Mounties there ? How have you got time for this as well ?

Just remember there are more sheep than people in New Zealand...:P

I would do the New Zealand one..:P

Nahhh, some of us are lumberjacks, too! (Though you really have to be careful with those chainsaws inside the igloo.)

And them sled dogs can get mighty hungry, eh? So I have to spend a lot of time shootin' moose and catchin' salmon to feed em too...along with their daily ration of beer ;-)

Whoa, just say a bad guy go by...gotta toss on the red serge and weird hat and chase em down...we always get our man...LOL!!!! ;-)

Nice idea!
02/29/2008 08:56:06 PM · #19
I love the idea, but I'd widen it to include any and all stereo types (for example occupational groups like teachers or dentists, hobbies like photographers and golfers, etc etc etc).

Large ziploc baggies are great for keeping the moisture off of the saws or if your thrifty use the bag you brought your beer home in ;)

On the RCMP thing, some of us are just plain lazy and sit in our igloo and drink beer all day.

You see that's why I could never fit in over there

1) I'm no good at riding horses - so that's the RCMP thing out the way . .

2) The idea of sitting in the igloo sounds fine - but ice cold beer in an icy igloo ?? that would play havoc with my bladder - I'd end up melting another door in the igloo :- )

The Huskies and Maple syrup sound ok though :- )

I see HeiSch has disappeared from the thread - probably off polishing his lederhosen . .

Wow, you shop at a classy joint, eh? They give you BAGS for your beer. I'm jealous!

maybe we should all do our own stereotypes, to have fun, and prevent the thin skinned from wailing too much...

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day.

He's a lumberjack and he's OK
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shopping and have buttered scones for tea

He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch
He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping and has buttered scones for tea.

He's a lumberjack and he's OK
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers.

I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars.

He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing and hangs around in bars?!

He's a lumberjack and he's OK
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspenders and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear Papa!!

I cut down trees, I wear high heels?!
Suspenders...and a bra?!...

I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear Papa!!

It's not that, it's just that we Americans are too lazy and apathetic to answer.

~Terry (that and I can't find Canada on a map... is that a state?)
