I know some of the photobook sites has std layouts but assuming a blank page, what types of page layouts do you use & like? Any references? I am starting to layout one for my parents... sort of loosely based on a travel format and was looking for idea on page layouts... photo & text with different chapters e.t.c.

I don't like the layout software for any of the publishing companies. I'd rather have more control of whereI can place things. Fotofusion allows more control.

OR, you can just do a full bleed and make it in photoshop yourself....The ultimate control. I used MyPublisher and was not very happy with all of the layout options...so I did one full bleed picture and made the layout myself.

Sure you COULD and you'd spend 10x the amount of time of doing layout in FotoFusion with results that don't look half as good.

Here's another recommendation for Fotofusion by Lumapix. It will save you a ton of time as compared to doing the same thing in Photoshop. And time is money. It's easily worth the cost. You can download a trial version and see for yourself.

While there are templates available... I always just "roll my own". Here is an example of a 12x12" wedding album I just delivered to a customer: BJ and Christie Wedding Album

Edit to add:

By the way, the album, as laid out, tries to take advantage of the images that the couple selected. They don't tell me how to lay it out ... only what images they want in the album and what priority they give them.

Here is a typical set of instructions I give to my customers to help them decide on a list of images to give me before I begin designing the album:

The purchase album has 30 sides to it. That can translate to as few as 30 images (actually, 15 if you do a double-page spread) or to as many as perhaps 90 to 120 images by putting 3-4 images on a page. But the more images there are on a page, the smaller they are. So here's what I generally recommend, go through your pictures and pick images that you can place into the following categories:

A. About 10 of your top-most favorite images.
B. About 20 of your second-tier favorite images.
C. About 15-30 images that you feel are "must have" images - images that don't need to stand out, but that you'd definitely miss if they were not included in the album. (could be family portraits, etc)
D. And another 15-30 images that you'd like to have, but if they don't make it into the album it's okay.

What I'll do is lay out the pages of the album such that images from category "A" will fill a page, possibly even a double page spread. There may be "overlay" images on top of those, but only in a way that fits the images without detracting from them. Images from categories "B" and "C" will definitely make it into the album with "B" images being more prominent than "C" images. Images from "D" would be considered "filler". Where there is space to put them into the album, we'll pick images that fit the page.

So, all told, you may be providing me with a list of as many as 90 images, 30 of which may or may not make it into the 30-side album. The fewer images you select, the more prominent they are likely to become on a page. And if you feel that there are more images than what I've suggested for each of the categories here, then we can consider doing a larger album with more pages. If that happens, we'll figure out about how many pages extra that we'd need and I could give you a price quote on the upgrade before beginning.

Thx guys... Let me have a play with fotofusion..... I also downloaded the s/ware for MyPublisher just to see what it has....

Edit: Hey David, Thx for the edit... That helps with my though process a little. Right now, I am trying to think thru what I want the flow to be since this will be text as well as photg... but at some point, I have to go thru the picture selection process. That one you have above is a nice album for a wedding!
