I am looking for a lens to replace the standard lens kit on the 400d, 18-55. Cant make my mind up from the SIGMA 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro or sigma 18-200mm f3.5 ΓΆ€“ 6.3 DC OS.Any ideas? |

i have a sigma 18-125mm and while its not the fastest or quietest lens in the world, its reasonably sharp, and ridiculously cheap. |

Why do you want to replace the kit? What do you need to shoot, under what conditions?

Would you consider a prime?
The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is simply amazing. You will not be disappointed with the quality of the lens or the pictures.
This lens would be amazingly sharper than the zooms you are looking into. |

Although a prime is quite limiting...
I have that lens and I love it, but for most things, zooms are a lot more practical. |

I have a canon 80mm prime which is very good. However I am after general lens to take on holiday. |

What don't you like with the 18-55? It is a good range. Fairly decent when stopped down, light..

The sigi 18-200 OS is a great all round 'keep it on your camera' type lens go buy it and start enjoying taking photos.

Ok, then I agree with MAK's suggestion. Great range for traveling light.

I have, for the second time, the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro. This is a good value zoom with long reach. However, you would need to have something for the short end of the zoom range.
I think you could pick up MK II 18-55mm from eBay for a good price. I used to like my kit lens for shorter work. I now have the 17-85mm IS as a kit lens and I am pleased with the results so far.
Sigma and Tamron short zooms are good, low priced lenses. |
