Hello.

I am wondering about using the auto button in the Levels dialogue box. Is it best to do auto levels first and then adjust levels, or just ignore the auto button altogether?

I would ignore the auto button. It might get close to what you want every so often, but you're much, much better off learning how to use levels and doing it yourself.

everyone has its own techniques, i use auto buttons alot just to what cs3 does with it, normally i undo and work from there, sometimes i keep it and work from there, but geoff has a point, learn how to use the tool, so at least you know what its doing when you do use the auto button.

it will also make you a better critical viewer.

I find that auto levels plays with the colour in the pics too, which is sometimes helpful and other times not. I started off using the auto commands before I realised what it did, now I hardly ever use it.

Auto contrast is helpful at the every end of the processing run though.
