I bought a remote a while back and I can't get it to control my D40X. Is there something that I need to do to program it? Remote is the ML-L3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the battery in it?
Is the battery dead?
Is the clear plastic tab pulled out?
Is your camera in IR mode? (same button as timer)

Have you set the shutter mode to 'Remote'? (little picture of a remote comes up, I would assume on the main LCD of your D40x- along with shutter/aperture settings etc. Mine is in the self timer section I believe) You can set it at either instant or 2s delay on my D50.

Yes, yes, did that, and yes.

Still nothing

Since it's IR you need to make sure it's pointed at the IR receiver at the front of the camera. So make sure you're not covering this with your finger or whatever. This caught me out when I first got my remote.

I have one menu that says "remote on duration" buit the settings are 1,5,10,15 minutes. Nothing is instant. Is this the right menu?

That just sets how long it stays in Remote Mode once set. After 1/5/10/15 minutes it reverts back to normal mode.

As John said, are you in front of the camera pointing the remote at the front of the camera?

(I assume you really meant No to the question "Is the battery DEAD.")

what was it? Sometimes on my D50 if my camera won't focus the remote won't go, I have to put it in manual focus for it to work. This just happen to me yesterday, i thought the battery was dead. I love that remote, one of the best 20 bucks I have spent on camera gear. Glad to see you got it working.

I thought I was putting it in remote mode but really wasn't. So user error on my part.

I know I was messing around with it yesterday and I am really excited about getting the chance to do something cool like that.

I use it alot too for night shots or longer exposures, just to get rid of slight camera shakes. For night shots I just putting the lens wide open, focus on the moon or stars, then put focus in manual and put the shutter on 30 secs. At least if you want some stars. I also put the white balance on tungsten. Enjoy. :)
