I'd like to give back to the community that has helped me so much.

So, one free membership up for grabs. You can either nominate someone or ask for yourself. Send me a PM and I will choose one of the people nominated.

Deadline is this Sunday, 24 Feb 08.

That is a very generous offer, just some advice from someone who has been there before - Have a real good look at the candidates ! I sometimes wonder how some people can afford top photo gear but cant fork out $25 for membership (there may well be a good reason). I wish I had done a bit more research before I gave mine away.

You know Mike, not to be a scrooge or anything, but I've wondered that same thing myself when I see these threads.

Wow Jan! Thanks!

I'm honored that you would pick me and really appreciate it.

I was actually planning on joining this weekend, you beat me to it by just a couple of hours. I have really enjoyed DPC and see how it can help me become a better photographer and I want to support this community.

So in that vain I am going to pay it forward and offer a free membership to someone else. Perhaps the runner up? Anybody have any other nominees?

I've thought the same thing and was pondering this quite a bit yesterday...I have to say that (from personal experience) maybe some people forked out a ton of cash for equipment a while ago and then hard times came and money is not rolling in like before and they need to clamp down.

I'll throw one thought into the mix about not buying membership. Perhaps the extras gained don't appeal to everyone. I had another look though what you get and I don't find anything that would prompt me to join up. Mainly it's the members only challenges being advanced editing that puts me off, but the portfolio, instant score updates etc aren't any incentive either. That said, most don't share these views and the generous gifts of membership are obviously appreciated, so as Mike says, pick the recipient carefully.

Understand that and like I said there may be a good reason (I know in some countries there are difficulties in paying even if you can afford to), I have seen people fall on hard times on here and have to sell some or all of their gear. I applaud the generosity of people on this site and I am all for helping out others that are unable to fund full membership. It will not stop me from doing so in the future but I will take more care before making my decision.

Kudos to you Moose !

Could use a couple more suggestions.

If it were me I'd have some kind of contest for it. A couple of members have done that in the past and it was fun.

Interested Non-Members (those who want to win) submit a photo and people "vote" on them here in the forum for a couple of days. I think the member sponsoring the last one had the contestants send (email) their photo in and the sponsoring member could then upload it to their workspace/portfolio (to hide the identity of the photo owner).

I'm sure there's some twists that could be applied, or something entirely different.

Just a thought. I'm currently out of ideas on who to present for a free membership. ;-) Guess I could dig around a bit, although I'd think it's more fun to get suggestions from members that know someone or have a bonafide reason to submit a name.

I did the same, Mike. There was a young man on here who wanted to become a member, but his bank/whatever could not use Paypal etc. I gave him a membership, he owns virtually every Canon product ever made. He didn't thank me, not that I was looking for it, nor did he enter challenges or participate in forums. I was disappointed and frustrated as I thought I was helping someone take part in this site.

I am now very wary of giving a free membership again, I only have so many teeth left and I don't need another kick in the teeth!

It was very difficult to find the right person but I finally selected vlado. He is a very active participant in challenges and the forums and I have really liked a couple of his photos.

There are couple of others that I am also thinking about also giving a gift membership to. I want to encourage whomever I can.

Craig ( Moose408).... A **HUGE** thank you for your generosity. Can't say how much this means to me. When I'm able to afford to do so, I too will give a gift membership to someone. Again... thank you so much.
