the way I do it is using canvas size. it's under the Image menu. click Image, then Canvas size. under new size, type in the width of the border in pixels (making sure you select pixels as the units). I usually use the same # of pixels around all sides. you can change the canvas color (the color of the border). changing the anchor gives you different effects (puts border only on one side, for instance).

How cool is that! Thanks! You should submit it to SC so it can go in the tutorials here.

I have a fairly simple method:

1) CTRL-A
2) Reset swatches (the black and white foreground/background colors)
3) Edit | Stroke; Width = 8, inside
4) Exchange swatches (black & white switch places)
5) Edit | Stroke; Width = 6, inside
6) Deselect

All of the above steps are in an action, so I just hit CTRL-F2 and it does it all. An example of what the border looks like is this:

I use the "solid border" plugin on this page //www.richardrosenman.com/software/downloads/ Easy to use.

There's an easier way.

1. Set your background color.
2. From the menu, choose Image/Canvas Size and increase by 10 pixels (or what ever size you want the border to be).

To get a Black border with a white inset border, first size with a white background for as small size, then resize with a black background with a bigger size.
