Hey everyone,
Just wanted some critique on my entry for "Panning", which ended up with a score just under 5:
i thought it was kind of similar in subject matter and flaws to this one:
(similar blown out highlights, subject not perfectly in focus, etc)
however that one ended up with a 5.8 average.
not trying to call anyone out or dispute scores, just wondering what made my shot suffer? was it mainly the magenta cast? the blown out higlights?
thanks in advance. |

I have to agree with Jaime, adding that in "NY city cab" the subject competes more effectively for viewer attention. That's because it has more accurate color, is lighter and the image has less highlights. In all it appears better "balanced" and is more interesting to look at.

In comparing the two shots the one that score higher isolated the cab better. yours has a bus and a cab and its sort of hard to tell which is the main subject. It seems that the bus is slightly better focused than the cab which may have been traveling a bit faster that your panning. Maybe the bluish lights down play the burnt lights a bit. hope it helped |

ok thanks. the "race" between the two was meant to be the subject, but i suppose that wasn't conveyed clearly enough.
cheers! |

In the one that got the 5.8, the cab is the thing that the eye is immediately drawn to. In yours, the cab and bus are both significantly darker than the lights at the top of the frame, and the eye has to spend some time bouncing around trying to figure out what the subject is. |
