If you are going to do a "postcard" theme, I suggest making the whole poster vertical so the photos can be in landscape orientation.

I agree, we definetly need to keep our shots in landscape orientation, as far as size goes for the final poster I think it should be 40"x27", but the problem I'm running into is what size the actual photos themselves should be. I figured it up to be if there is 10 rows of 5 photos, then the size of each photo would need to be no bigger than 8"x2.7", which is basically a panoramic. I can't think of any other way to have the photos laid evenly, so the other direction to go would be to have them laid out somewhat haphazardly or in a curve going from side to side or something. Let me know if any of you can solve this or have any other ideas. ;)

Is there a particular reason for the size (40x27?) Did you find somewhere in that prints this size? I am just wondering if another size might make it easier to fit the photos. Just some thoughts.

well, I looked up the standard size of a poster and found it to be 41x27, so I made it 40x27 so it would be a little easier to fit the photos in, but you're right I probably should go by a ratio that they use in the prints section. See, I NEED HELP! ;)

It should probably be sized for 20x30, so it can also be run at small sizes like 4x6, 8x12, 12x18 ... anyway, size it for some standard print aspect ratio.

From what I can tell you don't have anyone to shoot Oklahoma yet. I'll provide some shots.

Missed the "...and other countries..." part. Any room here for the Netherlands (or Holland if you prefer)? Hope it will fit on the map (we're not that big)

Hi, here is a 20x30 shrunk down with the photos being a 1x2. The alignment is way off I just threw it together to get a concept of the size and stuff.

This would be cool because since there is other interest you could have the title like DPC world or something then you could bring other countries down around the sides of the title.

Absolutely!! what we can do is one for just the 50 states and then one that includes any other countries! I majored in graphic design in college, so as soon as I get my software back (mac crashed, switching to a pc) I will start doing some lay outs.

I like this idea! So should we decide on 1x2 for the photos? We can always make the poster in the end a little larger depending on how many countries we can recruit! I'm going to be spending my day tomorrow trying to get as many of the states slots we have left filled, then I'm going to move on to countries. I encourage anyone who has free time and is bored to help. I will try to keep the list as up to date as possible.

Sounds good if no one volunteers for Wy I am going up there in the next two weeks so I can do it :)

Great! I'm not doubting your ability, but I do want really great shots for each state, so as long as 2 weeks is enough time to do WY justice, then its fine with me! I'll go ahead and put you down for it, but if someone else comes along, then you will just do colorado! Thanks for volunteering for a second state!! All of the close ones to me have been taken or else I would do more than one for the time being!

1x2?...so...that would be like having an image that is 4x8, or 5x10, etc.? That doesn't seem like a very stardard ratio. Maybe 4x6 or 5x7 would be a little more uniform?

I know this is for a vertical mat but this is for the 4x6 format. It could be as easily rotated to a horizontal layout. Or am I completely wrong in how you're describing the 1x2 option? -Brandon

I think we got to the 1x2 by realizing we need landscape layout, honestly I'm confused!!! I feel so helpless b/c I am at work with NO programs to help me figure this out!!! I will work on it when I get illustrator, but in the meantime I am loving all of the help and examples you guys are bringing. Math was never my strong point, that's why I am having trouble mathematically laying it out.

Well, I was hoping to help out with another state close by, but I guess Oklahoma is the only state I can do right now.

I travel a lot for business so if I travel somewhere before your deadline I'll shoot some things while I'm there. I never know when or where though, so I can't promise anything.

OK, now I remember why, we were going with aspect ratios that are used with DP prints, 30x40 was the one I suggested, and it kinda evolved to 1x2. Check out this page to see DPC's aspect ratios.
