I want to enter a competition at our local camera club called 1 sec shutter speed. I have an idea that needs to be executed outside. Twice I have especially gone out to shoot for this and twice i have been dissapointed and frustated. All i can get is a white screen my guess it is way overexposed so what settings do I use to get the right exposure and a 1 sec shutter speed?

Easiest would be to first try shutter priority mode. On your E-500 mode dial that is probably the "S" setting. In this mode, you choose the shutter speed and the camera tries to set everything else to provide correct exposure.

Since you are shooting outside, make sure your ISO speed is set to the lowest value your camera has available.

Some ideas to try:
1. Get a Neutral Density (ND) filter
2. Get a welder's filter plate from the hardware store
3. Shoot as the sun sets
4. Shoot by moonlight
5. Shoot in complete darkness & use light painting techniques

Shoot at the lowest ISO, shoot at a high F-stop(f11 and beyond), as stated a neutral density filter(s) and shooting at low light periods during the day. I recently shot in the late morning with two ND filters, ISO at 100 and f22 and still only got a second and a half, so as you can tell it is more about choosing the right time to shoot to limit light.

Quality might not be the best, but you can also use a couple of circular polarizers stacked together if you happened to have them.
