I think you should move the D to the front of the number. But thats just the Nikon side of my brain talking.
I have heard good things about both the 400 and 40 Really depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing. Ill let the Canon guys give you the serious advice.

The 400D is being replaced by the 450D soon, might be a better option as I believe it has the same sensor as the 40D.
40D is a super camera, liveview if you need it.
Or, if you are on a limited budget, the 30D is good also.
You will notice quite a jump from the 300D to either 30D or 40D. The controls will be familiar, but there are quite a few extra options.
Any of these cameras will be a good upgrade from the 300D. I had a 300D and really loved it, I struggled with the 30D and sold it after 6 months. I bought a Pentax K100D and had really good results, but last month got a 30D again. This time, I am taking it easy learning how to get the best from it. With a battery grip it is good weight for larger hands.
Good Luck with whatever model you choose:) |

Should you want to switch to the 400D of 450D, hold them first. They are MUCH smaller, feeling VERY different.
What limitations of the 300D are you running into? |

If the new 450d has the same sensor as the 40d and this has a good track record the 450d might be worth waiting for . The smaller camera size, well it somehow looks less professional if you know what i mean. |

It doesn't matter what you camera looks like as long as your pictures look good. Unless your DSLR is silver, then you obviously are a noob :P
I just got the 40D and like it very well. I like the heaviness and metal interior. The tiny cameras feel like plastic toys to me and I would break them in a week I'm sure. |

Can you believe that's my biggest concern.. I want to get a solid camera but I have small hands.. andI don't want to end up with a camera that I won't be able to carry for long periods of time.. Such a weird confusion...

no point getting the 400d with the 450d coming out- it looks better in every way. I'd opt for that because it does look like a brilliant camera for an upgrade. It's not built as strongly as the 40d, but it's a smaller camera so it may suit your hands better.
I have the 400d and found it too small without the grip but I have larger hands.
Basically, both of the cameras are great but the 40d shoots faster and will probs last longer. The 450d has more features, is cheaper, takes bigger pictures but isn't built as strongly.
Having said that, i've dropped my 400d on occasion onto concrete and had it out in the rain and it still works like it did on day 1.
