I vote for Jason as well. So that's a majority.

I don't know barbara's time schedule. Is she already on her way to Rochester to help her daughter.
It seems to me we should take her earlier post as definitive and let her think about the things
that are really important right now.

So, Jason, why don't you take charge and let cujee know what's happening with us and
our team.

PS my silverware is at 5.7 or so. no thrills there.

I sent Jon ( cujee) a PM and let him know that we would like to substitute chris48083 in for BAMartin. So what is our lineup for tonight's rollover?

BAMartin IN our hearts and minds
Bear_Music - ?
Sfalice - Blurry Mess
neophyte - Pollution
jasonlprice - Blurry Mess
levyj413 - ?
snowflakejen - Blurry Mess
chris48083 - Blurry Mess

I sorry, I thought I mentioned earlier that I've entered a photo in "Pollution".

Let me weigh in here to say you guys are terrific. I really do need to concentrate on other things right now, but I am cheering for you every step of the way. Jason, thanks for stepping up to the plate for me. I will be in touch.

I hope all goes well and everything gets back to normal as soon as possible.

Hey I just got your PM for replacing Barbara. I have no problem with that because she is permanently leaving the tournament. But Dirt_Diver is controlling the spreadsheet so you have to notify him about it.
03/11/2008 06:59:59 PM · #159
I would offer Dirt-Diver ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of Beer before you ask him!!

Great to hear, Alice! I, uh, edited my horrible grammar so at least I don't look like an idiot. :)

So I shot for blurry mess and then managed to make stupid saving mistakes and not get it in. I'm updateless for the first time in months. I'm already going crazy. And now I have to wait 5 looooooong days to enter harsh environments.

Ya know, for the first time ever, I have no idea what the requirement
is for Environmental Portrait. Talk about grammar!

Photograph a portrait that says something about the subject
within the framework of their own environment

Anybody got any ideas?
03/12/2008 01:02:52 AM · #163
Here's Environmental Portrait I.

Basically, take a portrait where the background conveys something about the subject. Whereas usually, the background is plain or made as invisible as possible.

A chef in a kitchen, a protester at a protest, a programmer in front of a computer, a photographer in front of camera gear, etc. Or in my case, a bureaucrat in front of piles of paper. Hmmm ... I wonder if anyone on my team at work would let me shoot them? ;)

It is good to hear from you Barbara and please do keep us informed here and stop by as often as possible.

I've contacted Dirt_Diver and asked him to replace Barbara with Chris (in the spreadsheet) for this week's challenges (pollution and blurry mess) and the rest of the Olympics.

My blurry mess is scoring 5.7. I can't buy a 6 in the open challenges these days!

Evidently there has been a missunderstanding and dirt_diver can't take BAMartin out of the spreadsheet and enter Chris because of the way the spreadsheet works. I've contacted cujee and asked him if I could keep an excel spreadsheet on my own with Chris' scores and have that be our official score. I'll let you all know when I hear back from cujee.

Either way, we need to all enter as many of the challenges as possible in the coming weeks and we will be fine...

PS. I didn't buy it, but I am currently at 6 on the messy challenge. I'm sure it will drop back down to sub 5 when the evening voters hit :)

Ya didn't offer him enough Beer or money!!

$35 an hour are my going rates. It would take me about 3 hours to update the sheet.

Jason as I said I am sorry. you are more than welcome to keep your own scores but I don't know what good it would do.

Just double checking on dirt_Diver's comments about replacements.

In two different places in the rules it talks about how and when a replacement player can be enrolled on a team.

So, it should be officially okay to put Chris in as a replacement for Barbara. I wonder if it would be easier to keep records if the scoresheet simply read:
B A Martin/Chris48083
If necessary with an asterisk that says "combined scores"

What do you think? Would this work?
03/12/2008 09:59:46 PM · #169
Yeah, I don't really understand why we're not allowed to sub Chris in.

I also think Dirt_Diver is pulling our collective legs. I just doubt it'd take three hours to change the name in a few places in a spreadsheet.

For me to actually change the name in the SS would take seconds but linking all the names back up with the areas that pull data and then running the program to pull data from the site and placing it in the correct area's is what takes so long.

As far as sfalice's comment goes, I explained to Cujee that once this went into play no subs should be used. In theory it sounds all good but mathematically it just doesn't work.

Think about it like this...

Lets say I have JulietNN's scores for 4 weeks in the SS. Then all of a sudden she can't play and I have to put in jasonlprice as her replacement. What happens in week 5 to that persons average when I have to download the results? Now Jason will either get all 0's (manually by me) or the data from JulietNN's remains. Is that really fair to those that already think they won a week because a high scoring user replaced someone else? It could throw scores off, it could change who won and who didn't win in all the weeks already played. The change can't happen. I tried telling people this.

If you don't want to believe me you don't have too. Ask SDW if you can enter his FSM after it's already started... He won't let you because 1 I already tried and 2 it throws off the results. I'm truly sorry and I would do it if I could but it just can't happen.

I just want to come out and say publicly that I'm on Dirt_Diver's side on this. He has volunteerd his time to setup the spreadsheet that makes it much much much easier to track the olympics and he deserves our thanks. The way I see things is that the spreadsheet isn't the "official" olympic document, This is. I wouldn't think it would be a problem for us to continue with the substitution and provide our own scores (easily verified) in the end, but I'll let you know what cujee says when I hear from him.

03/13/2008 09:52:30 AM · #172
Right, Jason. Dirt, I do appreciate your time. I just thought you were kidding around. Not maliciously, just teasing a bit. I appreciate your explaining in more detail.

As for the issue at hand, I think the original player's scores stand through when they leave, and the sub's scores then start counting. I don't see why you'd have to replace every score or change past results.

I also agree with Jason that cujee established that replacements were allowed, and that I think the whole system depends on everyone going by the same rules. It's not fair to establish it and then say no. Jason, did cujee respond?
03/13/2008 10:32:22 AM · #173
Totally agree Jeffrey and no I haven't heard back from cujee....

I think what Dirt was saying about replacing the scores is that his spreadsheet is based on a formula that hits the dpchallenge server automatically and updates our scores. He would have to convert the formulas to values for Barbara's score and add an extra line for Chris that would include his scores. I can be done manually so we just need to wait for cujee...

03/13/2008 10:33:19 AM · #174
Okay, I've just read all this and say that as long as we are all on exactly the same playing field,
whatever happens is okay with me.

I'll add that way back, when VisaCalc came out (remember that one?) I could make it sing, adding and subtracting
with the best of them. Now, I have to ask for help to add up a column of numbers in Excel 2007. Spreadsheets have
come a long way and I sure haven't kept up with them. My hat's off to anyone who has.

Alice

edited to correct my spelling.

What I can do is just remove BAMartian's name from the results page and put in your new team mates but the program will automatically pull ba's because I can't remove it from the data sheet. Someone will have to send me a PM every week with the new players score so I can just update it manually.

That's the best I can do guys.

But If I don't get that update every week I swear I will forget. I have a very bad memory and will forget things very fast. Since results are pulled on tuesday night at rollover I need an email just before or right after. I need them before I republish the results page.
