Ive been away from the States for a while, and I'm wondering if anyone can explain why Clemens (sp?) use of drugs (or not) is being handled by a congressional committee?

Unless im missing something, it seems a bit trivial for them, no?

Short version: there was a perception that Major League Baseball was incapable of policing itself and enforcing any reasonable standard of an anti-drug policy, so congress stepped in. Now a senator is also showing interest in how the National Football League handled the Patriots' cheating scandal. Pretty soon congress will be looking into DPC DQ policies.

I understand that the reason that congress is involved is that MLB operates under special examption from Federal antitrust laws and in exchange Congress has some oversight functions/duties.

That's the same reason Spector gave for looking into Patriotspygate.

Edit to add:

I'm sure it's true, but let's keep in mind we're talking about games. Entertainment. Guys wearing tights playing ball. Let the MLB do the job. If they keep f**king up, they'll pay in ticket sales, as they have over the past decade or so. Let Goodell do his job. No need to look over their shoulders and pretend it's of grave national interest.

As a non-american living here.... I am torn.... I have no idea why they should have anything to do with any sport wrong-doings.... but as someone said, it stops them doing something more dangerous :-o/

"Mr. Congressman, it was a tough time for me, I was on dodge&burn for 3 years and that just lead to cloning in basic"

Senator Spector, at no time did my editing techniques result in a change of a typical viewer's description of a photograph.
