Hey guys, I need some help - I was set to buy a Canon SD870IS to replace my Canon S30 as my portable camera and video camera (the video on the SD870IS looks better than it did on my old camcorder Canon ZR70MC and I'm not satisfied with the current video cam crop either).
BUT, I took some test shots in the store (with flash) and at ISO 80 the noise looks like my D200 at 800 - does this sound like a bad sample or are the 8 megapixel chips that bad even at the base ISO?
I checked out an SD1000 (7 megapixel) and was similarly unimpressed with the base sensitivity noise. The features (28mm lens and IS on the 870..) and build on both of these are great, but I don't think I can look past the noise.
I'm looking for something small, wide angle preferably, good video quality (640x480, 30 fps minimum) and good image quality at the base sensitivity...Any suggestions?

I have a Coolpix L6, the current version is the L11. It does not have much in the way of manual control, really just some scene modes, but I took some pretty decent shots with it when it was my main camera. (For about 5 months) Might be worth a look depending on what you really want in the way of features.

| I loved my old Nikon Coolpix (5400). I know the Canon G7 got good reviews. And there's a Fuji compact that is supposed to be great in low light. I wonder, though, if you are used to a DSLR, if all p&s's are going to seem too noisy in comparison? |

Nah, I'm basing my comparison on my S30. At ISO 200 or above I don't expect much (even out of the S30) but at 50-100 I'm used to photos being real clean. I took a look at the sample photos on dpreview and found some with and without the noise I observed at ISO 80. Could be exposure related. At higher ISO's its tough to tell since the noise reduction is so strong.
Thanks for the suggestions though guys. I think my ideal P&S camera doesn't exist = P (basically a 4-5 megapixel SD870 IS)
