I am looking to build an accessory for my camera that slides into the hot flash shoe. What is the piece that mates with the flash shoe called? A flash foot? Better yet, does anyone know where I can get one (or several- preferably that have a locking mechanism) without disassembling an actual flash?
My electrical engineering head is getting the best of me, but I can't find this part anywhere!

You might start with your local hardware store. Also google camera grips - often those come with lots of "spare parts" for construction things the way you want them. See if you can find the spare bits selling seperately from the grips. Sorry I can't point you in any particular direction, but I know the bits you want are buyable.
