| I was in a Wolf camera today and was looking for a molded lens hood to fit my new rebel XT. The saleman there explained to me that a hood was ineffective with this 18-55 kit lens since it is an externally focusing lens. He said it would only help at the smallest focal length of 18mm. Does not sound right. I look at this lens and the hood screws to the part that moves in and out. Seems like this should help at all focal lengths. Are there internal components that affect it, or does this guy not know what he is talking about? (He also explained to me at an earlier visit to this store that the Olympus E-510 was a "fine camera for mom & pop" but not for serious photography.) |

Your sales person is full of poo. The hood is going to be less effective than one made for a prime lens, but a hood on a wide angle zoom does indeed work.

I loath the fact that they do not have price tags on everything. If I was seriously shopping there, I'd have to ask the sales person "how much is this" every 15 seconds.
I, too, avoid them except to see a lens in person before buying it at B&H. |

Well, the guy on the other side of the building, in the regional clearance center, seems friendly, knowledgable and truly helpful. But this guy in the main shop has several times now offered advice that just sounds inaccurate. Since I am new to owning an SLR, I was not 100% certain. (But I've got a good BS detector, & I know where to get the answers!)
Thanks!
