I learned that I basically SUCK at shooting runway pictures!!!
SkylerCall invited me to a local photography club today where the group was having a get together with photographers and models for some fun and learning. He asked me to help out by bringing my studio equipment. They had, I think, 13 different "shooting stations" (various lighting and backdrops). Some where quite interesting ... a Rock and Roll room with electric guitars on the wall, an office environment, a kitchen, and much much more.
In some ways I felt that my setup was quite boring ... nice for portraits, but rather boring to put models in front of it.
Since I brought my own gear, I felt it was important to stick around my setup and help any photographers who had questions. Because of that, I didn't get out to shoot any of the other setups ... and ended up only picking a few shots of the model after the photographer left. (except the last girl, I had her to myself for a few minutes) Here are some of the images I captured today:

And examples of the runway shots I took. I discovered that the lighting SUCKS on the runway. At least, at this location. And if that's the "norm" for runway shots, then really it's me that sucks. lol Anyway, the "worst" of the bunch I converted to black and white to hide the color issues. Yes, I shot raw. The problem is the mixed lighting. Anyway, here are a few of the "better" ones from the runway shoot:

I bet if I mentioned models in the thread title I'd get more "lookers". ;-)

I think that you got a lot of good images. The first group suits your style and my tastes better. You had a busy day for sure. Thanks for sharing.

I would definately agree that the first group fits my personal tastes better. You certainly have studio portrait lighting down. |

The first lot are really good. The second lot are quite harsh in lighting and the palm really annoys me. |

I agree about the harshness. The problem was the lighting. There was a huge white background in the back ... which was otherwise pretty nice .. UNLESS I used my flash to light up the model. Then the white background went a pukey shade of yellow! And if my flash didn't light them up, then their faces were so dark as to be unusable. It would have helped if I had a matching filter on my flash head that could coordinate the color of my flash with the lighting that was on the background. That way the white balance could be fixed. But with the mixed lighting ... about the only thing I could do was either blow out the background or convert to black and white.

I think you did a great job (especially if this was the first time you attempted runway shots)! Even with the harsh/mixed lighting, you seemed to capture some really good images :) I'm sure you learned alot from the experience, and isn't "stepping outside of our 'comfort zone'" part of what will (hopefully) make us better photographers as we have to learn some new skills and techniques? Although I think the first batch is more of what I expect from you, your style is also evident in the second batch :) |

Great experience David. I really like some of those b/w shots! |

The shots with your lighting are fantastic, but I agree with about those on the runway. Besides the palm, why the white background? Somehow I think that's just asking for trouble. Is there any way to find out what photographers took on the runway to compare notes? Maybe it was just tough conditions to shoot by. |
