Ran across a deal on a Rebel XT kit with the 18-55mm kit lens for $327. But, it's the floor model at a store that only opened a week ago. Does not look to have been handled much, though that does not guarantee some 7 year old hands have not been all over the inside. I'd also have to do credit to buy it at this moment. Probably not the camera I would choose at full price, but it looks like a cheap way to upgrade to an SLR. Any opinions?

Come with a warranty? I'd say go for it. If it gets home and has issues, take it back to the store. If all checks out, your warranty will cover mechanical or electronic failure.

If you get the orginal warranty then I say go for it, sounds like a pretty good deal.

edit to add:

I have the the XT and bought it after owning the 20D & 30D and while there is a difference in feel and some funtions it is a very nice camera that you will not be disappointed with. I owned the S3, compable to the s5 you have and the xt blows teh doors off with speed and image quality, much lower noise in high ISO. As long as it isn't dinged up I would buy it if I were you.Trevor~

The sign posted says "as is", though I am sure the manufactuers warranty still applies.

Floor models get yanked about and bumped. You get what ou pay for. Recently I bought a floor model Canon lens (on the basis that I could return it if it was not 100% perfect). It wasn't and I took it back the next day and changed it for a new one and paid the extra. I would take in your own CF card and try the XT out on the store before buying it. Take the CF card home, download the images and check carefully...

I'd be wary of the deal under "as is." Like has been mentioned above, if it came with the originial warranty I would be tempted to say go for it. But- "as is" I'd be concerened.

Does anyone know if you can verify a warranty.

My other question would be, why is a store thats been open a month trying to push a floor model out the door?

As a previous "electronic retail store" employee, I would never buy a floor model, even if opened 1 hour ego. I even suggested to my customers to spend few more dollars and get a new one, if we didn't have the item, I suggested for them to wait... but I can only suggest once or twice, there were people still buying floor models.

Cameras have very fragile parts, and not mentioning the sensor problems, such as dust, scratch, invisible cracks (people are very harsh on floor items)

Your money, and if you can pay that much, pay little more and get the brand new box. Even without the lens, order Canon f 1.8 for 60 bucks, which will work fine if you need lens right now.

Well, I went ahead and got it. If it turns out to be a problematic mistake, it was not an enormous amount of money. It actually was less than what my S5 cost.

It will be a few days till I get around to obtaining some extra batteries, CF cards and all the needed accessories. I'll be taking it out for the first time on a meetup tomorrow, but I'll also bring my S5 along, since it has plenty of batteries and memory cards.

Thanks for all the advice, and I'll be seeing what I can turn out with this thing shortly.
