Okay, a several weeks ago I was given the option and opportunity to take candid wedding reception shots for a family friend of ours. Now keep in mind, they had already had the wedding a week before the reception. They already had the professional photographer at the wedding and dinner. They knew that I had never really done anything like this before, but they really weren't all that picky. It was really fun for me because the guy who took my Senior pictures this year was taking the formal reception shots there, I asked if I could get some tips and pointers. It was most helpful and I learned a LOT in a small amount of time. By the way, this was the first time I laid eyes on the Canon EOS-10D, and I'll say, it's a BEAUTIFUL camera. He had the whole get up and he let me even play around with it. It made me wish I wans't so poor. Okay, aside from that tangent. When I got there, I was a little discouraged because the lighting was not the greatest, and especially since I have a point and shoot camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-P72), it was really hard to get the pictures to look good. This was also tough because I have never really used my flash option before, so I got to learn how to use that. I must say, doing anything wedding related is really tough to do, but it is a lot of fun, especially if you know the bride or groom. What was most fun was learning the tricks of the trade. I HIGHLY encourage anyone who is given the opportunity to do wedding announcement shots or candid wedding shots to give it a try, even if you lack photographic skill (I mean, (i]even I[/i] managed to do it, so you have no excuse). You really learn a lto and I am glad I did. Check out my portfolio to check them out and feel free to comment on any of them. Just keep in mind that:
a) I'm still an amateur (at the VERY best)
b) lighting was bad
c)I had never done this before
d)they're candid
I love any sort of criticism because that's how you grow as a photographer. They are ALL in black and white (even though I gave them the original RAWS, these are what I consider my "showcase shots") because I think they look a lot better that way. Thank you for your time and enjoy!

I think you did an excellent job, Matt, especially with this being the first time. Candids are just that - candids; they're not posed, perfect lighting isn't expected. The important thing is that the bride and groom appreciate them.

I like how you were sure to capture the expressions - full face mostly... The tonal range was good. I think I'd prefer the shooting angle to be more at eye level than from below as you did for a couple of the shots. But that's a matter of taste.

I, for one, like B&W, but it would be interesting to see these in color. Will the bride & groom have these printed in color from the raw files you gave them?

Nice work!

I think you did very well, but I do not think that point and shoot digtals are good for this type of work. The backgrounds need to be blurred a little bit, to put more emphasis on the subject. You might be able to adjust the levels a little too to make the lighting more dynamic.

Good work.

How fun. Sounds like you learned a lot. I really like dp3 of the bride. Also sounds like you had a nice "pro" to work with a bit and you might even want to send him a nice little "thanks" note....not all paid wedding photographers would take the time to share ideas and even the camera! Just a thought.

Not to "parot" everyone else but, yeah, they are pretty good for an amateur. I took some pics at my brothers wedding last weekend and they didn't come out nearly as good yours (well some did :)

I was drooling over the equipment his professional photographer had. Oh man, what a setup she had.

These look pretty good Matthew, just one thing, you have some red eye on a few of them, not too bad in b/w but if they want colour they will need correcting.
well done, I am not sure I would have the confidence to attempt what you have done,
Paul.

Well, I've done a few weddings and I have spent a lot of time looking at what other people have done to get ideas, and I have to say, these look just as good as any! The only critique that I have is I have to agree with Zeissman, I would like to see the backgrounds blurred,... just a little!
