If you contribute to American charities that help veterans, please check this out.
PermaLink to NY Times editorial. Outrageous.
Link to the text of the House Hearing on Veteran's Charities.
Note: Scroll down to the last page (page 8) of the report to see the American Institute of Philanthropy's Charity Guide and Watchdog Report for Veterans and Military charities. Read it and weep.
For example, I've been sending checks to Disabled American Veterans for years. They scored a 'D' (the grade is based on percent spent on program services and on the cost to raise $100). That makes me angry. However, there are worse. Some F-rated charities contribute only 1 or 2 percent of what they take in on services!
I will definitely be switching charities to one of the top-rated ones -- thank god they exist.

For those who don't want to take the time to sort it out, these are the best veterans charities (ratings as December 2007) according to the watchdog report:
Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (A+)
Fisher House Foundation (A+)
National Military Family Association (A)
Armed Services YMCA of the USA (A-)
Army Emergency Relief (A+, but unnecessarily large reserves)
Air Force Aid Society (A+, but unnecessarily large reserves)
Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (A+, but unnecessarily large reserves)
USO (United Service Organizations (C+)
Veters of Foreign Wars of the US and Foundation (C-)
There were no "B" graded charities in this group.

That is why I am very careful and selective when giving to charities in the U.K.
I used to give a monthly sum to a U.K. based charity - then found out how much of my money ended up getting to the people who needed it.
I also worked with someone who's wife worked for a leading U.K. charity - then I found out the amount of subsidies they received (mortage etc) and pulled the plug on that one as well.

Yeah, I used to have money taken out of my monthly paycheck, but even that had a fairly high overhead skimmed off by the organizers for overhead. Nothing like the crooks in the news article, however! |
