I think I am going to go with the Tamron you suggested.

However, between the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8, which would you suggest . I can only afford one of them.

I had already bought the 50mm 1.8 but have not gotten so I could return that and opt for the 50mm @ 1.4... or keep it and go with the 85mm 1.8....

AGain, my plan is just to take photos of my kids events and the normal family photos, etc.

Did you even read what I wrote? If you are overpowering ambient, which you pretty much did, hence the dark background, ie your flash isnt used for fill, then the flash is freezing the action and then 1/250th is an acceptable shutter speed. However you have to know the difference or its not going to be enough.

Yes i read what you said I did not say the flash was not stopping the action. If they are wanting to take photos of there children what is wrong with it? My point is the flash is a lot cheaper than the glass and when she gets the glass she will still need the flash. I was just showing what 250 looked like. Did not intend to ruffle your feathers.

<--1/250th strobed

<---1/400th ambient light there is motion in the feet in this shot. Had that been ambient at 1/250th that image would not be sharp enough for print. I just want to make sure that people who may not know understand that if you go to 1/250th you have to provide the light to stop the action, otherwise they still will wonder why they arent getting good shots using what was suggested.
