i heard about this tecnique but i have no idea of how to set it up on my camera, which is listed in the title. does anyone else with this camera know how to set up a rear curtain sync?

it's in the custom functions menu. Set Shutter Curtain Sync to second curtain snyc.

Looks like custom function #9 on the XTi. You'll find it amongst the menu settings.
