I mentioned this in another thread but really worth it's own thread I think.

Wear a high visibility vest like one of these for when you're out shooting a challenge:

- makes you look "official" to paranoid druggies and most others with bad intent
- you are obviously not trying to sneak around, be covert or seem suspicious because of the high visibility
- useful when shooting in dangerous situations, e.g. roadside at nighttime for streaming lights

I can't think of a downside, but your mileage may vary. Works really well for me and is cheap and effective (but you'll look deeply uncool - but I think that's also the point).

Definitely lacks the 'cool' factor. :)

Hahahaha!! That's what was going through my mind, as well.

Though, having hoodlums circling you like wolves when you're out shooting as a woman with fancy equipment is not fun. Not sure if the vest will help with that. Maybe my toy sheriff badge?

I have this shirt with an emblem emblazoned on it that says Pennsylvania State Police.

At the top of the emblem, it says Homicide Squad.

At the bottom it says: Our Day Begins When Yours Ends.

Nobdoy EVER reads it all, and they generally give me a nervous look 'til I tell them to read the bottom.

I'd like to point out that I bought the shirt at a Stae Police booth at a show.

Now that is a shirt that would cover many situations. Maybe not shooting your children at the park, but... ;)

I think I'll take my chances with the druggies ...

Looks like you left out the most important part. The Stormtrooper helmet in the background is a MUST to complete the "look"!

i think that's a great idea. as i've gotten older, i care less and less about looking cool. anyway, i totally love nerdy guys so maybe wearing that vest would be like a nerd magnet... lol

Yes, but makes it hard to see through the viewfinder and it wrecks havoc on his hair!

Like I said, your mileage may vary. In the US there's a lot more gun ownership and gun related crime, so wearing a high viz vest has a lesser impact because if you're going to get robbed of your camera gear at gun point there's not much you can do (even if you've got one). I find my biggest threat is usually an opportunistic druggie if I'm somewhere a bit dodgy or secluded, or most places at night. To them the very thought of any kind of policeman or official is more effective than a gun for prevention ime.

One official could provoke quite the opposite reaction from a group of paranoid druggies.

I'd rather wear the official bright orange NFL/Canon photographer's vest. ;-)

Seriously, if you are shooting at night in an area where you would have to wear such a vest, then you probably deserve to be hassled (if not worse). Always (ALWAYS) go with a buddy in those situations. The more buddies, the better.

Last night I just went to a "questionable" side of Dallas to shoot the skyline. I though I could do this myself, but after a few warnings from others in another forum, I decided that I needed a buddy. Luckily, a colleague of mine lives in the Dallas area and we went out last night to shoot the skyline. Everything turned out okay, but there would be no way I would've gone to that place by myself.

I'll post photos later in the week. Look for a thread with "Dallas" in the subject line. :-)

Did I mention to always (ALWAYS) go with a buddy in those questionable situations, especially if you are from out of town like I normally am.
