I am surprised no one has answered this yet. And sorry, I don't think I can. But looking at the two specs pages for the two grips, one says for the 20 and 30D and the other says for the 30 and 40D. Does that mean that they are compatible? As in you can use it in the 40D as well?

The answer is yes from what I've read. I did some researching on the grips before buying and many of the sites said that the BG-E2 and BG-E2N are identical in almost every respect except for the BG-E2N having a rubber seal / weather stripping around the battery compartment door of the grip.
