So... I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I would like to enlarge prints to about the size of a VW. Can I do that? I can't imagine there's a lot of cameras that really take pictures that size. Are there professional enlargers out there? Special machines? Is it really expensive? It's very important to me that all the detail remains perfect even at really close range.

Thanks!

A) It can be done
B) Yes, it's expensive
C) I highly doubt you are going to get an enlargement that stands up to "close range". I'm guessing you would want to view from 6 to 10 feet.

Thanks, Doc (may I call you 'Doc'?)! We may have differing opinions of 'expensive' - do you know a range I might be looking at? Is there something I should search for to see if someone does it locally? I imagine that isn't something your standard lab does, eh? Are there certain things I should look for when shopping for an enlarger or is there anyone you'd like to recommend? Does this question belong better in a different section? Do you think that's too many questions to ask all at once?

Actually I don't have a price idea for you having never done it. Sorry.

I recently made posters from my daughters photos.
I took 3 x 4 ft print from 7mega pixel camera (exilim) file. There was no issue about quality. About the pricing, that depends on the place. I do not have what they would charge you. But for that poster prints I paid about 90rs which is roughly 2 dollars.

:-D

You might try the yellow pages for advertising/printers--outfits that do billboards and large posters could let you know pricing, formats, etc. I know a guy in Mesa who does that kind of work, will PM you his email address.

WOW!! A 3x4 foot print for $2.00!! Where did you get that done? I would have to pay $75.00 plus to get that!

In india, when I visited my parents I made 3 - 4 posters of my daughter to hang in my room.
If there was a way to post from india, I could have asked my bro to take print for friends.

I've never used it, but I've heard people swear by Genuine Fractals for large upsizing. You'd still have to find a printer, but this is something to maybe look into for at least getting a good file to work with.

Many printing houses can also upsize your image for your prior to printing.

General rule of thumb is the proper (ideal?) viewing distance on a photo is the diagonal measure of the image. So a 12 x 5 foot print (VW sized, right?) would be just over 14 feet.

There are commercial printers that can do this, and perhaps some pro labs. I think my lab's max is about 4 feet in width, and I assume length is as long as the paper/material is.

24" wide is commmon and then you just have strips printed and put it up like wallpaper.

Do you already have an image or have you yet to shoot it? Sharpness matters as things get BIG. (cheap lenses need not apply). Focus too - the human eye sees everything in focus, so a large landscape that isn't sharp and infocus will look really bad because it will look unnatural.

You can take the image like a pano - several shots - and stitch them together to get one large, detailed file. Many landscape shooters do this, even in MF!

I was at Arlington National Cemetery this past week and they have a display of photos of the Cemetery. One that caught my eye was a 15 foot long IR image - its' obviously many images stitched together. It wasn't more than 2 foot tall or so, pretty easy to get printed.

Print It Big
The prices are reasonable. I haven't tried them, but have seen them get nice reviews.

If you really want perfect detail at that size, so people could get close and squint, you could take a whole mess of macro shots and try stitching them together.
