I want to start photographing cars, but regarding selling anything I don't know where to start?
I have read the thread on copyright and have a couple of questions:
1. If I take pictures of friends cars can I sell them to magazines/forums for editorial content?
2. For any other commercial gain (i.e. prints) do I need to obtain the permission of the manufacturer?
3. There are many images on Alamy (say of Ferraris) which look like relatively amateur photos with no releases signed, what can they actually sell them for?
4. Can anyone suggest some good auto photographers websites, I have two great cars (of friends) that I could shoot in the next month or so and need some ideas for angles and detail shots? Any suggestion on lighting, especially the interior?
thanks

That was horrible! :-P
Anyway, I do know the answer to number 1. Yes, any editorial content is fine to sell. Commercial content usually is a no-no.. where the car photo was used to sell a product or service.
2) Generally, as long as you aren't using logos or trademarks in the design of the product and is a non-mass produced item (such as art prints) you will be fine, but the amount of hassle pretty much depends on whom is coming after you.
3) OK, now here is the deal. It's actually not your concern with stock photography. If Alamy will release it for commercial stock, it's the publisher that has to obtain license, not you. It's actually the same with model releases (although we generally aren't allowed to sell w/o them) the legal responsibility to have released images lies with the publisher of the image.
4) Flickr :-D

Agreed... local round track is fun too.
Show enough talent/interest and the track may pay you to be there weekly. I know I've paid a bill or 3 from local racing.

I love to know how one has that conversation. "Can I get a shot of you and your car? The print will only cost you $50."

50 is pretty steep! normally its
me- hey you mind if i shoot your car?
driver- sure, whattya shooting for?
me- just myself, but if you want some prints you can email me, heres a business card
driver- alright cool man...
*shutter snap shutter snap*
the local printer charges 5 bucks for a 8 by 10, so usually i charge 15 - 20 for a print, i also like to get some stats on the car and such

You can make some killer cash quickly selling $2.99 8x10 prints to local drivers and fans for $10-15 each.
