Well I'm finding people right now. Gordon has good points as do you bassbone. People's votes do matter or none of us would compete. I have read many books, classes are like chicken's teeth here I am currently looking at internet classes but I don't know who's worth the money. I thought it would be nice if we could use this site for a sounding board, and I have gotten better here if not in spite of the people i think are morons. ;) |

That's why comments are so much more important than votes. I hardly ever get good votes (10% of my submissions is 6+), but I don't care. What I do care about is the comments I get, whether they are positive or negative. I either become happy or learn from them, and both are cool.
I appreciate that you are trying to improve things. Like Bear_Music said, discussion is good. But my answer to the question in the topic title would be that it is irrelevant. It works in the sense that it determines three ribon winners each contest, all other aspects are trivial.

Basically everything that I know about photography has come from spending time browsing through the forums here, looking through others portfolios, making comments, and just enjoying the site. So i would advise when you have time, to just spend some time browsing around the forums, and through some portfolios and throwing some comments out, that is the best way to learn i think.
edit to add: if you ask people to post comments about a photo and why it scored as it did, be prepared to get some very blunt answers. blunt comments in all reality are the most helpful.

Mark at least you seem to get them.
My first received 8 cool
The second 6 cool and 1 post-post
The third 1 still in voting. voting nearly over
The forth 3 still in voting.
and the scores are progressively getting worst.
if you go look at my profile tell how many comments are truly useful.
NOW it sounds like I'm whinny
my point is that if voting had more structure and i could see what people though was wrong, you wouldn't get to watch me squawk about it.

I took a look at the comments you received. Let me quote two of them:
"this doesn't appear to be yellow."
"I'm sure you'll get many comments saying the same thing, but I'll add one to the list: Isn't this orange? ;)"
They won't improve your technique, but they do tell you what people thought was wrong, hence why they vote low for your picture. You can be sure that far more than two people voted low for this reason. To me, that's useful. I sometimes get useful comments that I decide not to care about, simply because I don't agree, or because my taste deviates. Still, these comments are useful, they tell me why people voted the way they did.
