Hi All,
I wanted to ask two specific questions on my "black" entry:
First Question:
I know there are some defects in how the dark areas were edited (I edited it very quickly and submitted it within a couple seconds of the deadline). What defects are visible on your monitor?
Second Question:
Was it apparent to you during voting that the camera in the pic was the camera that took the pic? If so, how did it figure in your vote?

Wow, how'd you do that? I didn't realize the camera in the picture actually took it. I assume there was some mirror action or something?
As far as the defects you were speaking of, I didn't notice them during the challenge but now see a couple of spots above the camera to the left and around the lens.
Unfortunately, I think the Textures challenge really took time away from the other challenges and we suffered for it. I know I didn't get the chance to go back and spend more time on the photos like I usually do as I was trying to vote on the numerous amount of texture entries as well. It's nice to see so many people participating, but man that's a lot of work. I noticed that as soon as that challenge opened, I got very few votes on my Black and Elements entries and no more comments. Did you see the same thing? |

I had no idea the camera was taking the photo. I did like the photo though. And the PS was a bit sloppy in some parts, as you mentioned time constraints. But I liked it.

Well it's a Canon!!!!
Just kidding :-) I think overall it's well exposed and an interesting way to do a self portrait. I do, however, don't feel there is anything in the shot to grab the viewer. Not sure if there would be some other way to draw in the interest of the viewer more though.
A quick, 'How'd you do that' write up would be nice.

Yellow on outside of the circle looks like it's not black. Used tolerence of "5" and the magic want in PS7 to click on what looked like it wasn't black and painted over with yellow. Opening image in PS7 darken the picture compared to viewing the image on DPC.
Inside the circle the yellow is what looks like may be brush marks and not consistent with the shadows.
The camera looks like it's flat and gray.
Would love to see the process of capturing the shot.

I wasn't apparent to me that the camera took the shot, either. :( I think it would have scored a lot higher if it was more apparent.
It's a good shot (lighting) but the circle around the camera is distracting and the subject itself (without knowing the camera took the shot) is a little boring since we've seen it a lot. |

Thanks to all for the comments. Rather confirmed my suspicions. Wish I had had more time to execute this, and to edit in a more considered manner.
Faidoi, your highlighting shows exactly where I screwed up by using far too heavy a setting in burning some areas.
The area around the front of the lens is where I removed the visible bit of the first mirror - actually a 90° "sneaky pete" lens adpater, angled to allow a not-quite-90° reflection to the second mirror, the rim of which is the ring around the camera.
I really had wanted to get two flat mirrors large enough to yield a good full-frame image. That would have allowed much more flexibilty, ease of set-up, and more time to mess with lighting. All in all, it could have been a much better shot if everything was right.
Thanks again to all, and to those who commented during the challenge.
@jenesis:
Yep, I noticed the drop-off too!

Now I'm wondering if my eyes are going, still setting my monitor wrong, or what. |
