Thanks to everyone on here for their opinions, comments, help, and generally great attitude!
I got my first DLSR for christmas, a Nikon D40 with the 18-55 kit lens, I have learnt a lot over the last few weeks, and enetering challenges is a very motivating way of making me go out and take photos, even when the weather is as dull as it is here!
So I took some portraits of my son the other day, against a white sheet, holding the camera in one hand and a big piece of white card above, to bounce the flash off. A bit of PS editing and they have come out exactly as I wanted! They printed out great at 10x8 and are currently in the frame makers.
These are the three:
My local photography shop asked me what camera and lens I was using as they really liked them, and they thought they had been taken in a studio (I think they were a bit surprised it was only a D40 with the kit lens), and then to top it off I was getting some smaller 4x6's printed at my local pharmacy and they nearly didn't let me have them as they accused me of ripping of a professional, ha ha.
So thanks for teaching me so much in such a short time, I am learning loads and can't wait to take more pictures. I was out last night until 2am getting some nice shots across a lake in the full moonlight, now focusing at night, that's a different thread altogether...
