Does anybody know how likely it is that Nikon will ever produce a prime f1.2 AF or lower? A friend tells me that the mount size on Nikon will probably restrict Nikon primes to f1.4, not that f1.4 isnt fast mind.

(edit to add AF lens)

I don't know anything about Nikon. But I find your question interesting ... especially the part about the mount size restricting the aperture.

I rented the Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens awhile back ... and I was totally shocked when I looked at the back of the lens (the part that fits inside the camera). The back of that lens is almost all glass! I mean, it seems like the glass goes almost right up to the edges of the mount. Amazing!

So based on that experience, I suppose it is possible that the mount might limit the aperture. But since aperture is a ratio of focal length to the width of the opening ... it does make me wonder if it might still be possible and that if all they need to do is pick a focal length that will fit.

They have produced a 50mm, 55mm, and a 58mm 1.2 prime in the past.
So it is possible.
Would they produce one now?

The 85mm may be an exception though.

As jay said they have made 1.2's in the past and it is the same bayonet mount they have used for over 50 years I really doubt it is the mount that's the reason they currently don't produce a 1.2 af lens.

No stirring haha ;)

I find it interesting that Nikon currently don't produce one if they have the capabilities.

edit: Aside from cost. There must be a market, 53 people on here are listed as having the 85mm f1.2 Canon.

i have the a 55 f/1.2 Ai & i can tell you it is a pain to focus manually
excellent when its right on but very specific
on the D200 the green focus light comes on for far beyond the actual focus
IMO this would indicate that the focus system is currently not optimized for something that shallow

You can read here about some f/1.2 nikkor lenses. I think one reason might be that f/2.8 zooms are more attractive (14-24 & 24-70) and it made sence to focus on that... don't know about the future but if you want f/1 now I think this is an alternative...not cheap though.
