Let me preface this with the fact that Yes, I am feeling pissy this morning...nothing to do with DPC...had a very lonely birthday.

But, that doesn't mean that I'm not gonna rant.

Please, can I make a request that people make an attempt to be both constructive and polite in comments. I despise condescending commenters (especially non members commenting in member challenges). I know that technically it isn't personal, but it is rude as hell and not exactly the thing a photographer needs to see first thing in the morning.

Okay, end rant. I feel better.

I'm sorry Shari but I feel I must 'rant' back.

Firstly there is nothing wrong with non-members commenting on members pics - sounds like a class system.

Secondly, as someone who has only commented 104 times yet entered 72 challenges...?

Finally, this is exactly the kind of thread that will put non members off joining, and anyone from commenting.

If someone has been down right rude and nasty, my apologies.

Aren't you the one who is always screaming "It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it?" Especially when it comes to comments.

Please, this is a rant. I said I was ranting. The definition of rant includes the fact that it likely isn't rational.

My opinion is that condescending comments are rude. I'm entitled to that opinion.

Hoho so aren't the people whom comment on your photographs entitled to their opinion, and my opinion welcome on your opinion?

Seems you contradict your own contradiction....

Seems to me that it is condescending for someone who has received 668 comments but only commented 72 times to presume to tell others how to comment. Experience is a great teacher. Hope your day gets better.

What does my "record" with DPC have to do with anything? I really love it when people bring this up like it is the end all and be all of what a photographer is in this universe.

You don't know me. You don't know what I do for a living. You don't know why I do or don't comment on things. In fact, you don't even know if I comment on anything because maybe, just maybe, I do it outside of DPC.

Condescension is Condescension. We're supposed to be here to live and learn. Telling someone something in a condescening manner helps no one improve.

You're an English professor, I do beleive.. As a semi-linguist myself, I've been meaning to ask what your PhD is in? I was considering a PhD in computational linguistics myself..

I never said anyone wasn't entitled to an opinion. What I said was I wish people would make an attempt to be polite and avoid condescension. It wasn't what was said, it was how it was said.

Shari, if nothing else, expect to be misunderstood. Unfortunately. Sigh..say your rant and don't even bother checking back to see new posts cause you can be certain what they'll ALL say.

I think most of us can agree with this. There is no need to be nasty with comments left on a picture. The stated idea of this site and the comments is to help the photographer improve their craft, not make them feel like crap.

Unfortunately, when you say this, it sounds condescending also. It sounds like you are saying that non-paying members are not as worthy as paying members. I doubt that was your intention.

I don't know or need to know your reason for not leaving more comments. I'm very erratic myself, sometimes leaving 4 on one challenge or 70-90% on another. I don't think people should be judged on how many comments they leave. Sometimes I just don't feel qualified to comment on a picture. Maybe that will change the longer I am on this site.

Good rant, just maybe taken slightly wrong.

P.S. Happy Belated Birthday.

So why do you rant so much while you vote so little and comment almost not at all?

Happy Birthday!
