No, it's about being realistic about your expectations from a website.
I don't want someone banned because they are grumpy and disagreable. And no one is ripping moderators an new a-hole. I have been around these moderators, and talked to with them for 2 months and like them myself.
As I said, I don't disagree that there are some elements of what you said going on here but it takes two to make a fight. If folks would act as if the post they don't like never existed then how long would the argument last?
I want those guys here because they have had some interesting photos posted here and I want to see more. I get a little frustrated that they don't post more photos and start less troll threads is all but..hey..it's their perogative :-)

i'm sorry, but i think i have to disagree. i've been watching this site for a little while now and what seems to be happening is that, even though these 'moderators' are supposedly people that are liked and respected, as soon as one of them stands up to one of the poster-children, moderation is evil posts spring up like weeds.
in fact, i'm sure the reason the poster-children haven't said anything in a day or so is because they're too busy rolling around the floor holding their bellies, laughing at the irony of the situation. reminds me of the old cartoon where the brat acts up but the good day takes all the flack for it.
and as for how any of this relates to "free speech"? i didn't see the sign saying that this board belongs to the public. do you support people grafitting your house? does your place of work allow you to use a megaphone to extoll your religious beliefs and criticize your co workers (disregard if you work at home or are the owner/operator)? can you do or say *anything* in any given night club? of course there is free speech, but if someone has an axe to grind or something to say that no one wants to hear, then they are perfectly free to go buy their own bandwidth and try to convince people to come and listen.

They haven't posted because they have been banned. Maybe you ought to check your assumptions. ;-)

What I fear is that when we start drawing the line at mild examples of online stupidity where is the next line drawn.
I do not say that you don't have the right to be mad or perplexed at their behaviour, my behaviour, etc, etc
But perplexed and anger are things you can feel and even control without the need for banning.
I don't KNOW what they (the trolls) are doing..maybe neither do you.
And 5 days of watching does not equate to 2 months of watching, posting to the forums, submitting photos and corresponding with the moderators and the admins. I feel very confident in my assesment of the situation. |

Actually, didn't the thread start out a simple rant about the general role of moderation?
Guys, I am the first person to agree that this is a photogrpahy site first and foremost but Drew and Langdon did put a Rant section here :-)
The most agitating thing is when folks come on a rant section of a messageboard and tell the folks to quit ranting :-)

Mikeflowers, I wish I was asleep instead of here to reply to your posts (it's 4.30am here), but you are hilariously wrong, about me at least. I don't care at all what happens to those guys who hang around on the forums and act like dicks to the amusement of some and the annoyance of others, bless their hearts. I care about me! And, indirectly, anyone else who is like me. I'm no troll, but I'm the kind of person who ends up testing out any moderation system because I am, as one of my friends put it, a "conflict machine", and I can identify a few others here who are like that too. You only have to look at the thread that Hokie and I transformed into an argument about cold fusion apropos of nothing at all to see that.
The problem is that the trolls here are leading the forums down the track of some fairly heavy moderation, and it's people like us who can end up paying for it. I don't want that. It's too nice here for me to be worrying about pissing off a moderator and getting a thread locked because I beat some dead horse that no one thought should have been taken out and shot in the first place.
And Digipixer and Shortredneck, as Hokie pointed out, this is the rant forum. I finished voting on the photos two days ago, and I've submitted my entry for this week. Do I get a hall pass? |

Yes Lisae...and one MORE thing about that cold fusion deal ;-) I hate when a true believer like me gets beat with the facts...grrrrrrr.

I highly doubt anyone would have a problem with that. The idea of the moderation system, as it relates to the forums, is to: a) Help Langdon and Drew keep track of what people think of the site, what people want out of the site, and what people are getting out of the site, and b) Keep personal attacks away from the forums.
The problem is that the trolls here are leading the forums down the track of some fairly heavy moderation, and it''s people like us who can end up paying for it.
What''s heavy about it?
Is it the fact that personal attacks won''t be tolerated? (Do you know that they aren''t tolerated on Half-Empty either? Nebby has banned users for personal attacks rather than waiting for the radiance system to stop them from posting).
Or is it the fact that posts, when they get long and unweildly, may become locked? First, I''m not even sure this is going to be the norm. But even if it was, consider that if this wasn''t the case, old posts with 96 replies would come to the forefront of discussion every time a new user signs up, looks at the old forums, and posts a "me too". Don''t forget that Half-Empty archives ideas after they''ve been dead for a while, which means people don''t drag out the dead horses to beat them to death yet again. The only difference is it''s automatic there, so it happens to every post, and it isn''t automatic here.
I don''t want that. It''s too nice here for me to be worrying about pissing off a moderator and getting a thread locked because I beat some dead horse that no one thought should have been taken out and shot in the first place.
Has there been any indication that you, or people like you, are going to be silenced here?

I certainly don''t think of that as a controversial argument. I couldn''t understand a word you were saying.

Amen to that Reuben. I get the feeling we have been judged for what some are expecting us to do, not what we have done.
Hokie this is a rant section but how long are we going to continue to rant about this one incident? This is tiresome.

A rant only needs one person. Anybody else can quit at anytime they want :-)
