Hi everyone,
I have decided to enter an open art exhibit for local artists in my area. I have decided on two pictures, and was wondering if anyone had the time if you could please tell me if you see anything obviously wrong with, or what your general opinions are of the two photos I have decided to enter. The first, pink petals, is in its final form; the second, jellybeans, still needs some post processing attention but is pretty much what the final product would look like. Also, any advice on framing/matting selection would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking cream mat with gold frame for petal photo, and white mat (with thin black border on photo) with black frame for jelly bean photo. Thanks in advance for any replies!
(Just wanted to add they will not be hung together so the subjects do not have to compliment each other)

I think the petals picture is fantastic. A genuine work of art. The jelly beans pic is well done but IMHO is not in the same league for artistry and aesthetics. Perhaps it is simply too ordinary for my taste, but of course, tastes vary! |

I have been in my local art gallery before, and I was told to keep your photos together, try to keep them in the same color frame. I would try it in a black frame with a cream or off white mat. Try the gold frame as well. I think the Jelly beans are nice too.... try them with a bold white mat and a black frame too! :) Nice job and best of luck to you!

i like the one of the petals quite a bit better. it seems more thought out, and the composition works better... IMO

Thanks for the input - it really helps. I was happy with the petals photo, but wasn't sure how other people would like it. I realized last night that when I cropped it I left it not quite the right aspect ratio for an 8x10 and now am having trouble changing the size without ruining the composition! I have a couple of days left to play with it - I hope I can get it. Anyway, again, thanks to all who replied for taking the time to look at them - I really do appreciate it!

The petals pic is a simple mostly one color photo. I think it would be cool to do it as a triptych. Change the colors on the other two to soft pastel like tones that match the other 2 and put them together. I think it would be a really nice artsy type picture. Or maybe print 2 others different and then use the mat to make the triple. Just a thought.

Hi again,
another quick question if anyone has time - I am thinking of leaving the petal photo cropped the way it is (which is the aspect ratio for 5x7 when I really wanted an 8x10). I am wondering if anyone had an opinion on if I leave it 5x7, however mat it to an 11x14 frame? I think it would look better than trying to re-crop and messing up the composition, but don't know if that would be ok to do either. Does anyone do this with their photos? (matting and framing is a huge weak area for me!) Thanks |

I'd probably leave the picture part like it is. You could add some space around it, enough to make it an 8x10 and then put the title of the photo and your name along the border. I usually make the bottom larger and put everything there. That way your name is there. If they don't like that, they can cut their own mat and cover up what they don't like.

Thanks Bob,
I didn't see your post yet when I last replied. I really like your triptych idea - I have never done that before and I agree it would more appealing that way. I will play with the colors, etc. tonight and see if I can come up with something. I can go at lunch and look for that type of frame (the three would have to be in one frame as there is a two piece limit). If I can't, I will go with your idea of adding space to the bottom and some text in. Thanks for your help! |

Try a museum mat. They allow you to put a smaller picture in a larger frame. Some pictures don't look right in a museum mat, but others looks awesome! I would give that a try too!

Thanks for the tip Lorrie - I had never heard of a museum mat. I will look into that too!

Both shots are interesting. You may ask the promoter, who is expected to view the exhibit before choosing a particular shot. Younger, older, students, critics, etc. |

Thanks for your input fadoi.
I also want to thank everyone for the tips on how to address the odd size of the petal photo. After looking for frames and spending all night trying different things, what I have been able to do is the method of adding more space to the bottom and adding a title to fill the space to an 8x10(will insert below). I tried to redo in different pastel colors, but couldn't get a good result because of my limited software (or my limited talent - feels better to blame the software though!) Anyway, I believe the final version will be:
Now I just have to pick a frame and mat - the really hard part:)
Thanks again everyone! |
