This shot was supposed to be dark, but when I got it printed at a photo printing store (who I presume have their eqipment calibrated correctly), it was so bright that some areas were nearly blown.
To those of you who have calibrated monitors, can you please tell me if its either that my monitor (Dell laptop) is way off, or if the shop deliberately brightened the image to ''correct'' my mistake (the darkness of the shot)?
Thanks everyone. |

| It's dark on my monitor. I'm guessing the guy that printed it out for you thought "wow, this guy needs to calibrate his monitor, lemme lighten this baby up for him ." |

Haha thanks, thats what I thought. My monitor is probably off, but I was hoping not by that much.
Cheers Eric. |

Yeah, it's pretty dark...

Does the print look something like this? The reason I ask is that Auto Levels (monovhromatic mode) raises it to this point and is likely what the lab is doing too.
If you're not using a custom lab, it's always a good idea to see what auto levels does to an image.
You may be able to ask for (and get) no correction on the image to be printed as is.

The print I got was a fair bit brighter on the shoulder area, but your edit is pretty close. It also has quite a strong yellowish cast on the print, is that the lab's doing?
Thanks Leroy. |

Yes, more than likely the printer is making auto adjustments to the photo. That said, if auto levels changes your photo significantly, you need to make sure the lab doesn't apply any correction to your print.
