the funny thing:

most photographers would love it when people were discussing his or her photography.
we are discussing the layout from his site, credits for that go tothe designers mentioned above.

I think then you missed a target there. a big target too.

What Hanneke said ... It seems most of us are treating the photographers talents as secondary ... The purpose of the website should be to highlight the photographers talents ... not TOTALLY steamroller them with quirky effects that would turn a lot of people off ... just labelling the navigation links would go a long way ...

Well - It's wrong to blast music by default anyway imo BUT that mute does NOT turn off all the sound in that intro.... That is unacceptable from a design point of view. There are accepted web practices and once you go away from those you run a risk of aggravating people... fine if it's a fun site but if it's people wanting to buy your images or business related they will not bother and go to the next on the list.

Too true. This discussion is happening on another site about models pages. Everyone says, "Just mute it. Turn your sound off." I don't WANNA! I want to listen to the music I have playing (currently Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, 'Thank You, live'). I'm more inclined to close and not come back. NEXT!

I don't care for it one little bit.

It is a messy disaster and I hate being forced to listen to somebody else's music.

For a start - _eug you're a legend.

For seconds, I reiterate that I don't think it's the best way of getting your photo's out there for potential buyers, but it is a LOT more engaging and captivating as a site than the majority of Web 2.0 bull that seems so prevalent in portfolio sites these days. There are several people who've posted that they've spent a few minutes working out how the site works - I think that's genuinely a triumph on the part of the designers. You WANT to figure it out, you WANT to get to the next "level". It's like all the great TV ads, you might not necessarily see a blatant plugging of the product, but you get a feel for the ethos of it, it makes you think. This guy might not have the worlds greatest shots, but we're all still talking about it aren't we? There's a sense of style and it's involving, how many sites really do that?

I have to copy THAT into my flipping profile!

Edit: Better yet. My signature!

I thought it was excellent and easy enough to navigate, mine looks so boring compared with that !

I don't think that's true at ALL. The only reason I "wanted" to get into it is because someone started thread and set "great photos here" and I wanted to check them out. I looked at two photos before I said "This is BS!", left the site, and have not gone back. Not because of the photography, but because of the site design. And now we have people visiting the site to see what the fuss is about, not to see the pictures. I couldn't even tell you the photographer's name now, unless I referred back to the first post. How is this is in any way helpful to him?

Top right button! Switch it off! :)

I think the site is pretty cool once you find your way around it. I like the novel way of displaying the photos. Thanks for sharing!

SO,
If someone invites you to thier house to look at some of thier photos, and when you get to thier house you see that the furniture is really tacky with yellow pleather sofas etc, and in the background some bad music is playing....you will say 'I cant look at your photos, its too much for me to handle'?

Lets get serious, the guy originally asked about what people think about the photos, Im sure a little bit of background musak and 'differnt' web design did not send you all into epileptic fits so that you couldnt say something about the photos.

ok, boo to all you old ney-sayers, LOVE the site, easy/fun to use...but the pics are mediocre, anyone of us could do that (or probably better) put in a studio setting with proper equipment.

i do agree that the "music" should be destroyed though, ugh.

Actually, that's NOT what Jimi asked for: he didn't actually "ask" for anything ΓΆ€” here's the entirety of the original post:

"If you've never seen this site before I'd check it out, truly innovative and the guy has some great stuff. Inspiring."

Jimi was actually more focused on the website than the photos, as far as I can see, and telling us we should "check it out", which is what we've been doing. My feedback on the pictures, from what I saw of them, is "competent but uninspiring"...

It's clearly established web protocol that you DO NOT play music on your website by default. Not just because people might be listening to other things, but because they might be recording an audio stream, be around people who don't want to be disturbed (and sometimes muting the whole system is not an option, e.g playing very quiet music), but most of all, because a large proportion of web users absolutely hate it. And most people are clever enough to avoid alienating half their potential clients.I thought that this only happened on Myspace these days.

I agree about the music thing, I lived with a girl who used to visit her boyfriend's death metal band page on myspace like 10 times a day. Drove me insane.

I agree.....Music by default on a web site is annoying. I keep my speakers muted 98% of the time because of it.

I hope someone contacts the photographer and directs him to this thread.

I don't recall any of his photo's but I do recall how difficult it was to access the gallery!!

Well that was annoying, I finally figured out how to get in, never did find where to turn the music off. I couldn't figure out how to shuffle and I couldn't keep track of which images I'd already looked at. I did manage to look at a few, I feel that's quite an achievement but I couldn't tell you if they were good or not because I found the whole experience so irritating that I just didn't care what the images were like I just wanted to get out.

I've sent him an email with a link to this thread, hopefully he'll find the feedback helpful.

I thought the layout was cool. But the photography... meh. Some shots were good, most were not.

MUTE = Really tiny words in the upper right corner
SHUFFLE = Strange swirling circle at the bottom in the middle.

Amazing what?

I get bored with sites like this after about 30 seconds. If you want to promote something, promote it. Don't try to be clever about it as you'll probably turn off the people you're trying to promote to.
