I just got a new laptop with Vista...I have a HP Photosmart C3100 installed on a desktop with Windows XP. The laptop (Vista) can see the printer through the network, but if I try to print it says something to the effect that 'I am not authorized....'

The printer is already set to share, as this setup worked perfect on my XP laptop.

Is this a Vista issue? Is this a printer issue? Is it because it is on a XP and a Vista is trying to use it? Do I need to install Vista drivers for it (if so on which, the laptop or the desktop?)

anyone? that is about the extent of my knowledge!

So far this is the only problem I'm having so far...none of the nightmare Vista stories I have heard about.

Ran into the very same thing...I did download the Vista driver on the desktop w/XP, but the XP machine told me I could not have two drivers, so not resolved yet...but will share once i get it figured out!

Not sure if it is the same thing, but when you first used your Vista laptop, did you make sure that you were the administrator. I think as registered owner, you become admin. Without being Admin, you will not be authorised to add/remove/delete on your machine.

Perhaps, this is the problem as when I add printers etc, I am asked to confirm and as Administrator, I have no problems at all. In fact, just the other day added wireless printer to my network in a couple of minutes, no hitches at all.

Hope this helps solve your problem:)

The store setup Vista when the hubby bought it and i don't think either of us is the administrator as hubby's profile won't let him add the printer.
(Go figure....grrr)
Makes perfect sense.

Thanks.....I don't know if I am Administrator....but will check that first...

Hope that is it...that could be an easy fix!

Have you tried it this way? (not the ideal way but this fix from another forum has got printing to work for a few).

1.) Verify that File and print sharing is turned on and properly configured on the XP machine.

2.) Locate and notate the Win XP computer name (i.e. "Desktop") (Found in System Properties in the Computer Name tab)

3.) Locate and notate the printer share name on the XP computer (i.e. "Printer") (Found under the Sharing tab on the Printer Properties page)

4.) On the Vista machine launch the "Add a Printer" wizard

5.) Choose "Add a local printer"

6.) Select "Create a new port" radio button and choose "Local Port" from the drop down menu

7.) Press Next

8.) In the "Enter Port Name:" box enter the following: \\Desktop\Printer where "Desktop" = the computer name from step 2 and "Printer" = the printer share name from step 3.

9.) Select the Printer driver from the list provided or use the "Have Disk" button to install the correct Vista driver if it is not in the built-in list.

It is critical that the driver you use is Vista compatible.

10.) Press next

11.) Give the printer a distinct name and choose whether to set as the

default.

12.) Press Next

13.) Print a test page to verify functionality.

14.) Press Finish

The Access Denied is kind of weird... What flavor of XP (Pro or Home) is the shared printer using and what flavor of Vista is on the Laptop?

Wow Andy, thanks for those detailed steps....I will follow them tonight....I know from reading that I did not do these steps (i.e. add the local printer, I was trying to print it as a network printer)

The laptop is Vista Home Premium
I think the desktop is XP Home....gotta check on that one

ANDY, You are my hero for the day!!!! Thank you SOOOO much, your instructions worked like a charm!!!!! I think my mistake was I was trying to 'connect to a network printer' rather than use the 'add a local printer'............

I am very grateful, as I had NO CLUE what to do next.
