Reading recent posts and being a newbie here I see that members feel there is no continuity in voting. I have seen some comments with a breakdown of how the score was decided, is there (or should there be) a definitive guide to voting in challenges?

IMO, such a thing is pretty much unenforceable. Looking at the distribution of scores for my (and other0 shots, I feel that the DPC voting system is very fair, and though there is quite a bit of variability in individual opinion (standard deviation of 2.0-2.5 is pretty common) the voting commonly follows a normal distribution, which might be expected.
It's easy to see some outliers and conclude that the voting is screwed up, but the statistics say otherwise.

The voting system here, I believe, is extremely fair. I feel that the winners are most deserved after looking at the scores and I generally feel that my shot was justly scored. Granted there are some people who may vote low on some shots, but then again, they are averaged out in the long run by the vast majority of the people who vote very fairly and honestly. It all works out in the end really. People have very high standards for this site and really, I feel that most people know and understnad that, meaning that the voting levels out rather smoothly, except for the few minor extremities.
