One of the very first things I do after downloading my images to my computer is run the "Auto Rotate JPGs" tool on them in BreezeBrowser. Does this manipulate my images EXIF data making them ineligible for submission as proof to the DPChallenge admins if I win (like that's going to happen)?
Just wondering because that would really suck to have an image disqualified because of a simple rotation of the original image.
Thanks!

My understanding is that the original, unaltered, image is to be submitted as proof...if you save the orginal and make your edits on a copy, your EXIF data will of course be intact. If you are performing these operations on the orignal, and plan to sumbit it as the original, you would be violating the rules as I understand them. |

An image that has been rotated is no longer an original. You would not be dq'ed for "a simple rotation" as rotating an image is legal in both Open and Member challenges. But if you get a request for an original and can't supply one you will surely be dq'ed. |

In this case, I personally don't think there would be a problem. BreezeBrowser is very careful about preserving all of the EXIF data. And since the rotation algorithms used in BreezeBrowser are lossless, nothing changes except the orientation of the image. That being said, not all programs are as careful as BreezeBrowser is with maintaing the integrity of the EXIF data. But in this case, I'd say that using BreezeBrowser to auto-rotate based on the orientation sensor in the camera is fine. |

However, to be truly 'safe', the suggestions most frequently made are to make a copy of your files and then make any edits on those.
Another thing: When I transfer my images from the camera to the computer, I make a folder and then dump all the images pertaining to that folder into it.
For example: 2-23-2004 Free Study. That way, everything is not only chronological, but then has a tag that relates to all those images - rather than renaming each file to Free Study 1, Free Study 2, etc.
Maybe you all have other methods of filing.. this is not the point. The point is to keep the original image intact out of the camera in every possible way.

Thanks EddyG,
The reason I ask is because I immediatly burn all of my original images to DVD and don't keep any on my hard drive. When I go and browes the DVD I don't like for my pictures to be laying on their side. I like them to be upright or in the portrait oriontation if that is how the camera was being held when the photo was taken. I agree that BreezeBrowser does an excellent job retaining the EXIF. Thanks again!
