Has anyone tried this DIY diffuser?
I don't know if I'd trust it. Plus, it doesn't seem like it would pack very easily. I'd rather buy something like this, or use a ping-pong ball, or tissue, etc.

| I'd be a bit worried about shoving something into the hot shoe fitting on the camera. |

For £15 you can get a Sto-Fen, which isn't that bad and they're pretty small. I bought a cheapo Lambency diffuser for $7 on ebay which for the moment seems to be okay (cheap enough and possibly better than I could do with tracing paper and masking tape!)
EDIT: Oops..I just noticed it's for the fill-in flash. Sod that! Monique is right...metal wires near hot shoe contacts would worry me too.

For on camera pop-up flash use a white ping pong ball, cut a nice little wedge like slot in it and it will slip right on... one heck of a diffuser with no spill over, if you have to use the on cam flash.
ED: I thought I read your whole post but see you mention PP Ball... my bad.

FWIW, it's a very inefficient design as would bounce much of the flash backward away from the subject. The ping pong ball would be much more efficient.
For those that haven't seen the ping pong ball diffuser.

You know what Leroy, I think I'd like the plastic golf ball better. They seem like they would be more durable than ping-pong balls if placed in my already overstuffed bag. ;-)

| another alternative along the same line as the pp ball, is to cut a slot in the side of a plastic film roll container (so it mounts horizontally) |
