I have been in negotiations with Emerald City Smoothie here in Seattle for doing their marketing images for them... since the majority of my portfolio is more people oriented they asked for a few test shots of product examples to help them with their decision...

It is the same image just with some tweaks with the edits and is just a quick sample for them. I just made a quick run to one of their locations, grabbed a smoothie and came up with this on the fly. One big mistake I made that I still managed to make work was shooting these on a white background! That made masking the cup out a big pain in the you know what. They appeared to be happy with what they saw and soon hopefully we will have a contract signed and the real work can begin.

The final images their marketing team is wanting will be very similar of perspective, but they want the smoothie surrounded by the fresh ingredients.
I am also wanting to add condensation to the cups and fruit as well to make it more appealing and fresh!

Anyways, I know DPC has a great eye for the fine details and there are not much pickier crowds then us. Feedback on these test shots would be greatly appreciated. SORRY if this should be posted in another forum, I had a few related posts here so I felt it should be continued in this forum.

Hey there! I'm certainly not the target audience you wanted to ask, but, as an eager consumer of healthy smoothies, I like the picture quite a lot! I especially like that you're showing the ACTUAL smoothie in the cup instead of those silly fake foods they use a lot in commercial advertising!

In addition, from my experience with graphic design, these images would be VERY useable and versatile, too. Nicely done!

My humble opinion: I like the forst and last of the ones posted. The gradients are "smoother" :) All very good shots! I'm not sure about the light reflection on the surface of the drinks - seems like most ads favor more texture - the reflection creates the appearance that it is very watery at the top or has melted a bit. But whaddo I know. Congrats and fingers crossed for you getting the gig though!

Thanks for the feedback both of you :)
Art- you are spot on, another thing I would change is that after I picked up the smoothie I had to run and drop a friend off and then I had to drive to the studio... as the smoothie was slowly melting...
The studio I work out of has a small fridge and freezer and it went in that once I got started, but for the final product I will keep a close eye on the consistency of the smoothie!

Thanks!

I'm in agreement, the smoother gradients looks so much better. I like the lighter BG for the dark smoothie as well. So, the first would be my first choice, with the last being my 2nd.

I also prefer the smoother gradients ... have you considered using a pale green one to match the name "Emerald"? I think it would play nicely with the pinkish color of the drink and bring out the name on the cup ...

great feedback you guys... the 1st and last were the last ones I did, they were my original plan...and I think they would also look much better with the ingredients included surrounding the cup. The other two were more graphic examples.
Other colors are a definite possibility. They have many flavors so I plan on changing colors of the BG to what looks most appealing for that particular smoothie.

You might want to consider using a color wheel to find complimentary colors for each smoothie flavor ... that would really draw the attention to the ad ...

They look nice!
Somewhere out there are rules on Truth In Advertising - like the food you're selling has to the food your selling, not some fake stand in. Other things in the ad (like the friut around the cup) might be OK to use imitations of.
You should check this out so you and the Smoothie company don't accidently create some nightmare down the road.

thanks chris, i will clarify with them but initially we have talked about using all fresh fruit. They have also mentioned including some of their powders and health additives, to me those are ALOT less visually appealing, but that will make for a good challenge if they decide to include the additives.

They of course are wanting to play hardball and did knock me down on my price, and I can tell they already have unrealistic expectations of getting all the shots done in an ungodly amount of time...(we agreed to a day rate, so of course the faster the better for them)... but since I have already given in on a few things in our next meeting I am going to take a stand on some things I am not willing to budge on and make some clarifications. They were just on the news last night... how they were expanding to the east coast, yada yada yada... SO for as much as they tell me they have to keep a low budget, they ultimately DO have the money to spend.

The whole thing of course makes me really nervous, but wish me luck!
