Hello everyone,

I am looking at reviewing my print prices. There are two extremes in my town. I'm starting to compete rather well with the well known, been here forever photography service, and a few others. In saying this, there are huge differences in prints in the "well known" , which is higher, and another which is quite a bit lower. Mine is somewhere in the middle, but I am wanting to revamp them, and I need some ideas. My packages are just thrown together, so YOu all have always given me great ideas here and there so I would appreciate anything you can give me.

Here's my regular standard print prices:

4x6s: $6.00 (10 for $50, 20 for $80 you can use different poses, you're not limited to one pose.)
5x7s: $15.00 (2 for $25, 5 for $60 you can use different poses here as well)
8x10s: $20.00 (2 for $35, different poses as well)
11x14s: $45.00 (2 for $75, different poses as well)

tear them apart, offer any ideas. i have thick skin. i really appreciate it!

Your prices are way too cheap if you plan on supporting a business with them.

Cheap prices often means you'll get cheap clientele. Kill the 4x6s and start at 5x7 for at least 30% more. (I will sell 4x6 for the 5x7 prices it my client is desperate for a 4x6)

edit: grammar

The only "break" I give in my prices, is when they order copies of the same image. Then I'll give them a 33% discount on the cost of the duplicate (or smaller) prints. So they pay for me to do the full work on the largest image, and I'll discount any further prints I do from there. To me it just makes sense. It saves me time if I only have to edit one image. So I'll pass that savings on to them.

But any non-duplicate images are full price no matter how many they order ... because the more they order, the more time I'm going to be stuck at the computer editing.

On the opposite end of the spectrum: One tactic I've been experimenting with lately ... when a customer orders only an 11x14, I will try to get the to go up to 16x20. If they don't bite, and I think the "advertising" might be in my best interest, I'll offer them the upgrade to 16x20 for no additional cost! I'll try to sell them a larger frame to go with it but at that point I don't mind either way. I just want the exposure of having one of my 16x20" prints hanging on their wall in order to attract the next customer. :-)

Prices for what?
HS Seniors or weddings (proofs or prints?), family portraiture, sporting events/events in general...

I try to have 2 prices - package and non package (ala carte). If the client buys a package then anything else they buy is at a pacakge price (about 20-25% off alacarte pricing).
SO a sr package is say $400. That includes a number of prints and poses. If they want an additioanl 8x10 for grandma then it's $24.
if they just bought a session and no package, then granny's 8x10 is $39. Yeah, that one size has the biggest price difference :D
Wallets come in sets of 22 (3 sheets, I keep 2 wallets. Its a seperate topic why I do that) per pose.
If they buy a LOT of one print, then sure I'll work a deal, but except for wallets (thankyous, grad annoiuncements) that rarely happens.

Events and schools have lower pricing, $12 or so for an 8x10. They won't pay more.

I sell 8x10 and smaller as 'gift prints' and 11x14 and larger as framed only. It has not been a problem. Every once in a while I get someone that wants it loose as they have a frame they want to use...that's on a case by case basis. My packages ALL include a framed item as the main item, so it's mainly weddings and family ports that want large, loose prints. I'm selling a loose 16x20, but it has to be shipped to London from the US and I'm ok not sending that in a frame!

My online prices for weddings are the same price as in the studio. I tried cheaper and higher, and sales didn't change at all. If they want the photo, they'll pat $12 for a 5x7, but then 95% of sales are 4x6 (be that at $2 or $8 the number of sales didn't change)
